Project Canary

Project Canary Project Canary® is an environmental data and software company. Formed as a Public Benefit Corporation, the U.S. www.projectcanary.com

Project Canary® is an environmental data and software company that collects, analyzes, quantifies, and visualizes asset-level environmental risk assessments and emission profiles. As a measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) solution, the Canary SENSE Platform™ integrates a networked sensor canopy, including 3rd party sensor data and assessment scores, to provide independently verifiable cl

imate attribute data for upstream, midstream, and CCS (carbon capture and sequestration) projects. Project Canary’s insights help energy organizations improve performance, manage risks, and deliver auditable decarbonization data. Colorado-based team includes scientists, engineers, and industry operators focused on the path to True Zero™.

📍Today marks the end of one road and the beginning of another, as the EPA’s OOOOb ruling comes into effect. After extensive collaboration and feedback from industry stakeholders, this ruling establishes new requirements for monitoring methane emissions (among many other topics).

For Project Canary, the key aspect of this ruling is the opportunity for operators to adopt alternative technologies, including continuous monitoring, to meet regulatory standards. Amidst the flurry of claims that may arise, we’re going to stick to the facts.

Here's what you need to know:
➞ No technologies are currently approved under EPA’s NSPS OOOOb.
➞ Project Canary will submit a comprehensive application once we're confident it meets EPA’s stringent standards.
➞ The EPA operates on a "first in, does not mean first out" basis.
➞ The EPA has 90 days to conduct a completeness determination, and 270 days to approve or deny the application – or the technology will be conditionally approved.

We stand firm on our commitment to always be transparent about our technical capabilities, and we look forward to releasing more details on our proactive and nuanced approach to the application process next week.

Here's to embracing the new era of methane measurement and detection.

🎥 Next Thursday, May 9th, Project Canary is hosting a webinar featuring Insight M (formerly Kairos Aerospace) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, moderated by GTI Energy – diving deep into how imperfections in measurement approaches impact annual emissions accounting.
As operators begin the path to measurement-informed inventories for initiatives like OGMP 2.0 and new regulations, understanding the tradeoffs of different measurement approaches is paramount to driving more accurate emissions accounting.
In this webinar we’ll discuss these tradeoffs + more, including:
→ How measurement frequency and geographic coverage impact uncertainty
→ How uncertainties are incorporated into measurement-informed emissions accounting
→ How operators can use this information to craft measurement strategies for their assets

Our quantification algorithm took years to develop, but we’ve had one goal from the very beginning: create the most accurate facility-level methane emissions monitoring system. This imperative led us to release Quant V2.5 in June, which accounts for plume rise.

Why plume rise? The weight of methane matters. If you don’t account for buoyancy, you might get a completely different quantified emissions value, especially at higher release rates.

Our Research Scientist, Jorge Guerra, explains some of the scientific considerations behind our quantification algorithm:

📆 As the spotlight intensifies on tackling methane emissions, we're thrilled to be a part of CH4 Connections in Fort Collins, where we'll discuss our quantification journey and what the future holds.

Our very own Kieran Lynn, will be presenting and taking questions on the developments of our quantification algorithm on Oct 4th – we look forward to seeing everyone up there!

Accounting for the complexities of a given site is a key focus of our Quant v3 model. Obstructions are a perfect example of how different variables on-site can vastly impact methane concentration readings.

Watch this video below to learn more about the limitations of the Gaussian Dispersion model, and how our v3 model begins to tackle some of the challenges it presents.
