You know how I always say I shoot flying competitions? This is it: SAFECON. Teams from colleges all over the country get together and participate in ground events (things like aircraft recognition, and flight planning) and flying events (things like navigation and landings) to see who takes home a national championship trophy.

Aviation weather: a little lesson from my husband on flying and thunderstorms during a very active storm last night.

So when I shoot flying competitions, weather is a HUGE factor in how the events play out. Last year at nationals, schools were making mad dashes to get their planes to airports where they could be hangared when storms rolled in. Pilots are trained to not fly in thunderstorms, and contrary to our jokes here, the smaller the airplane the more you have to be conscious of wind limits and weather. As a photographer for these events, weather drastically impacts what gear I bring and even whether or not I shoot an event. I consider how much protection I have for my gear and how long it would take to get to shelter. Sometimes that means I get a few shots and head back or sometimes it means I hang out on the ramp for the day. While I always have a game plan either way, if inclement weather is predicted NIFA rearranges the schedules to allow for the safest flying conditions.

The reason I keep coming back for NIFA events is because of the storylines. The teams who show up to Nationals for the first time and win a category for the first time ever, the underdogs, the chips on the shoulder to win it all, the early mornings, the grief as some compete in their last SAFECON ever, the rivalries, the reunions, the friendships, these are the things that pull me in. These are the threads that knit .aero together.

Connecting with and working within a good story is why I do any of my work at all.

NIFA Safecon Nationals Recap 2026.

High: Elizabeth City showing up with a presence and their coach winning Coach of the Year.

Low: UND took 2nd. And I’m still super proud of them. UNDs team is one reason why I keep coming back.

Weird thing that happened: on the first day of landings there was little variety. They were either out of the target box, damn near close to the zero line (the goal), or a go around. It was wild.

Is it October yet?? I miss it already! .aero

I know Memorial Day has passed but this year it was kind of tricky deciding whether or not to post something. I'm very adamantly anti-war. We can't honor the memory of those who shed blood for this country without recognizing that some of them went to war not to fight for the ideals of a nation under threat, but to protect powerful people who didn't care if they came back, all under the noble guise of patriotism.

Where is normally pack a suitcase and my work bag, I have a suitcase, my work bag, a small camera bag, a camera suitcase, two strobes in their own carrying cases, reflectors in their own pouch, and two large soft boxes. It takes at least 3 trips to get it into the car.
