A 42NET Kft.

Born on this day: Jake Kasdan (October 28, 1974), film and television director, producer. Turning 52 today.

Director of the Jumanji films and Walk Hard, born in Detroit while his father, future screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, was writing ads for a local agency.

Jake Kasdan was born in Detroit in 1974 to the writer Meg Goldman and Lawrence Kasdan. At the time his father was working as an advertising copywriter at the W. B. Doner agency in Detroit, a job he disliked but was good at, while writing screenplays at night; within a few years the family moved to Los Angeles, where Lawrence went on to write The Empire Strikes Back and…

Today’s Detroit place: The Spirit of Detroit

A city symbol: a green bronze figure holding a golden sphere and a family.

Marshall Fredericks’ sculpture was dedicated in 1958 outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. The small family held in one hand represents human relationships, and the monumental seated figure quickly became a recognizable symbol of Detroit. Close views reveal its scale and material; a wider view places it in the civic landscape. The Joe Louis monument and riverfront are a short walk away.

🏙️ RenCen news: What happened to Detroit's earlier 'Transformational' projects before the RenCen?

None of Detroit's three earlier Transformational Brownfield developments is fully finished: three of four parts of Bedrock's first project are done or nearly done, District Detroit has started only one of 10 projects (Founders Hall), and Future of Health has one of six under construction. The $2.2 billion Bedrock-GM RenCen plan would be the fourth since 2017, and the two want approval before year's end because they fear the next governor, taking office in January, could change the process. The RenCen request would capture up to $300 million in state taxes from 2032 to 2051.

🏙️ RenCen news: “Indecent”: Bedrock’s CEO answers a council member’s RenCen questions

Bedrock CEO Jared Fleisher called Council Member Denzel McCampbell’s position “indecent” three times at the City Council’s Planning and Economic Development Committee hearing on Thursday, October 22. McCampbell had asked why the roughly $2.2 billion RenCen plan needs public money and why part of the site won’t become city-owned. Fleisher said the project returns 1% with the incentives and loses money without them; the developers are seeking about $548 million in tax breaks and subsidies over 30 years.
