Today marks the third anniversary of the East Palestine, Ohio freight train derailment and fire. The emergency response by the 100’s of firefighters dispatched to that scene was heroic, but their response was significantly hampered by the absence of any timely information about what was on the derailed train. They knew there was a train fire, and where, but they had no information for more than an hour about any of the hazmat onboard, and they were unknowingly dispatched straight into a hazmat hotzone. That endangered the first responders, and exacerbated the dangers to the community.
One of our most important jobs in public safety is to always learn from any incident, and to constantly improve. At RapidSOS we are proud to have quickly worked with our partners at Norfolk Southern after this incident to ensure the immediate digital transmission of concise and actionable train consist (content) information to the appropriate ECCs and field responders when any NS rail emergency occurs. RapidSOS stands ready to quickly partner with every other rail carrier to do the same.
As the leading public safety AI company building the world’s largest safety network, RapidSOS is proud to have worked to close the safety gap that impaired the emergency response in East Palestine.
