At Kintrack, everything we build is powered by one invisible force: precise satellite positioning. Today, we pause to honor one of the greatest minds behind that technology: Dr. Gladys West.
Long before GPS became part of everyday life, Gladys West was quietly solving one of the hardest problems in science and engineering: accurately modeling the shape of the Earth so satellites could determine location with precision.
In the 1960s and 1970s, while working at the US Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dr. West used early supercomputers to process massive datasets from satellite measurements. Her work focused on geodesy, the mathematical study of the Earthβs shape, gravity field, and rotation. At the time, the Earth was still approximated as a simple sphere. But in reality, it is an irregular, slightly flattened shape known as an ellipsoid.
Gladys West developed complex mathematical models to describe this ellipsoid accurately. These models became the foundation for modern Earth reference systems used by GPS. Without this precise geometric framework, satellites would not be able to triangulate positions correctly. Errors of just a few centimeters in Earth modeling would result in location errors of kilometers on the ground.
Her work involved advanced numerical methods, orbital mechanics, and coordinate transformations. She helped refine how satellite orbits are calculated and how time delays in signal transmission are corrected using relativistic physics. These corrections are critical, because GPS relies on atomic clocks and precise time synchronization. A timing error of just one microsecond would cause a location error of nearly 300 meters.
In short, Gladys West did not just contribute to GPS. She helped make it mathematically possible.
Today, every GPS tracker, every navigation app, every fleet management platform, and every real time location service stands on the foundation she helped build.
