The largest ever study on the impact of in-store digital signage was recently published in the Journal of Marketing.

Researchers working at both Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and Babson College analyzed data spanning 237 advertising campaigns and 30 million shoppers.

One of the most interesting facts uncovered in the study is that digital signage not only affects point-of-sale purchases, it also “stimulates incremental consumption for a brand beyond featured products at the checkout counter.”

What does that mean? It means shoppers who see in-store digital ads are more inclined to purchase the brand’s other products during the same trip.

What’s worth noting, though, is that this effect tends to work for new and low-priced products, as opposed to high-ticket items.

Where you position your digital signage can be just as important as what you display.

This is something that we’ve talked about in the past, but this statistic really stuck out to us because we’ve seen this situation so many times before.

Crowding too many displays in one area can create confusion and distract people, also known as “information overload.”

In fast-paced retail environments, visual clutter and competing visual elements can create feelings of confusion and anxiety, causing people to ignore what otherwise might be an impactful message.

How do you avoid this issue? First thing is to space out displays.

But beyond that, remember to limit text to keep screens from getting cluttered and use white space to keep content easy to read.

Last month, we talked about how placing signage too close to an actual promotional item decreased the chances of it boosting sales, instead of increasing them.

If you’re struggling with the details of your digital signage, the Coffman Media team is here to help.

QSRs chains are aware that digital signage can improve drive-thru performance, but are they all optimized for performance?

Not always! There are some important things that people tend to overlook when installing drive-thru digital signage or planning content.

💁Make it eye-catching
High-contrast visuals are more eye-catching and make it easier for customers to find what they want and order quickly. Overly complicated menu choices or weak typography can make that even harder.

💁Guide customers with visual cues
How have you segmented your Drive-thru menu? Are seasonal or promotional items getting the real estate that you feel they deserve? Use motion graphics to call attention to important sections and make sure that important information is getting found.

💁Embrace personalization: QR codes are now an important part of the drive-thru experience, as they’re a convenient way for customers to unlock loyalty rewards.

For forward-thinking companies, you can deploy AI cameras to identify types of cars, like minivans or sports cars, and offer targeted recommendations.

The American consumer, retail shoppers, are bargain hunting. Can digital signage help you attract budget-conscious customers?

Most research indicates the answer is broadly, yes. Digital signage gets noticed at higher rates than paper signage and is more memorable.

However, researchers Anastasia Nani and Andrea Ordanini recently explored the impact of promoting discounts on digital signage and found the following:

“Through two field experiments in grocery stores involving 7,009 customers, we found that promoting price discounts on digital screens has a significant impact on the sales of discounted products located farther from digital screens.

Our results show that digital screens promoting price discounts effectively increase customer spending only for discounted products located farther from screens. Interestingly, this effect was negligible for products positioned near the screens.”

Turns out that the role of signage is more nuanced than just “build it and they will come.” Let us know if you have any questions.

Digital signage is on the frontier of customer experience in retail, but why? Let’s take a look.

First, it captures attention. At the most basic level, moving images are more visible and hold attention.

Digital screens get 60% more attention than static posters, and people remember upwards of 80% of digital content, compared to only 20% of print ads.

Another reason why we see digital signage getting such a warm reception is that it’s allowing marketing leaders and visual merchandisers greater flexibility to pivot their promotions to adjust for seasonality, current events, and inventory issues.

And the last reason is personalization. In 2024, 83% of consumers wanted more video from brands. As social media continues to dominate consumer attention, QR code integrations, rewards programs, and other promotions that seamlessly integrate the in-store and at-home brand experience are only going to become more important.

Corporate leaders struggling to train and upskill employees have a powerful tool in digital signage. Here’s why:

Signage provides a stronger path to micro-learning. All-day training sessions are horrible for retention. Studies show that less than 25% of the information from a day-long seminar is retained 24 hours later.

In contrast, strategically placing digital signage around your facility with reminders, helpful tips, and provocative questions reduces cognitive load, increases engagement, and combats memory decay, improving retention.

Digital signage also provides increased engagement.

A 2022 study by Axios and research firm The Generation Lab found that 82% of workers ages 18 to 29 say doing the minimum required to keep their jobs is pretty or extremely appealing.

One way to motivate a jaded workforce is to build interactive content rich in audiovisual elements that incorporate AI-powered camera technology, touchscreens, and complementary digital technologies.

University IT leaders and procurement managers: Are you maximizing the impact of your digital signage?

The number of use cases in education continues to expand beyond just wayfinding and visitors’ centers. Let’s quickly look at three that we feel are underutilized.

1️⃣ In cafeterias, digital menu boards reduce paper signage waste and empower food service leaders with the ability to change their menus as supplies and unexpected events demand. This can lead to serious savings and efficiency gains.

2️⃣ There’s also community building. Even in mid-sized universities, important events and accomplishments can be hard to promote. Digital signage can help you highlight the achievements of students and professors.

3️⃣ Lastly, we’re seeing some exciting developments in the safety and security space. We’ve recently partnered with International, a developer of AI-enabled security solutions that integrate deeply with our signage.

In case of an emergency, these integrated solutions can identify danger and automatically guide students to safety using wayfinding solutions. These are enormous benefits Universities may be missing out on.

In-store displays have been shown to generate, on average, a 20% sales lift.

But how do you maximize the impulse buy effect? If you want to get serious about it, then digital signage offers serious advantages that traditional strategies don’t.

Digital signage gives your customers dynamic video and animated content to engage with, which provides real-time, highly contextual ads that far outclass what you could achieve traditionally.

Eye-catching creative, more memorable experiences, and interactivity are some of the key benefits of digital approaches, and those benefits all scale exponentially as they’re deployed across a franchise or chain.

10/21/2025

Are you still drowning in the cost of print media? Many QSR franchises and retail chains aren’t accurately tracking their printing expenses, while these "small" costs quietly cost them serious money.

Every campaign means paying for specialized paper, colored ink, mounting materials, installation labor, and eventual disposal. But the real killer isn't just the upfront costs—it's the endless cycle of waste and repetition.

Need to change something? Update a promotion? Launch a new product?

With print media, you're stuck in an expensive loop: take down old materials, redesign, reprint, reinstall, repeat. Each "small" update can cost thousands and generate massive waste from discarded materials and toxic ink disposal.

Digital signage will pay for itself by eliminating the print-update-dispose cycle.

Still relying on still images to capture the attention of customers in your stores? You may not be making the impression that you could be.

Video is better than still images because it engages more senses—both sight and sound—while providing more context and movement.

To maximize the recall of your signage content, don’t be afraid to make it emotional. Weave user-generated content or case studies into a story that stimulates the same elements of a good narrative film.

Then, find an environment that aids your ad recall, with as long an exposure time as your location will allow.

Choosing an environment for your signage means first analyzing how traffic flows through your stores, then considering environmental factors like light conditions, reflective surfaces, and weather conditions.

There are many things to consider to get it right. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions.
