Meta removed over 159 million Scam ads and 10.9 million fake accounts across Facebook and Instagram last year, and the same handful of tricks kept showing up on Facebook Marketplace.

Rentals listed far below market price. Fake giveaways promising you've "been selected." And sellers pushing you to pay outside the app with a discount as bait.

None of it was real. The rental never existed, the giveaway just wanted your card details, and paying outside the app meant zero protection the moment it went wrong.

If this happens to you, don't just block and move on. Save their username, phone number and email, their profile link, the bank account number and bank name they used, and screenshots of the listing and full conversation.

That “allow” you tapped without thinking twice? That’s exactly what a fake app is counting on.

Plenty of these apps make it onto the App Store or Play Store by looking completely ordinary at first, a simple game, a flashlight, a photo editor. Once they’re approved and downloaded, that’s when the real behavior kicks in. They ask for permissions that have nothing to do with what the app actually does, and if you tap “allow” without checking, they get exactly what they wanted.

From there, they run quietly in the background. Your name, phone number, email, location, even your payment methods, all of it becomes accessible while you go about your day, completely unaware.

And that’s how it turns into real financial loss, unauthorized charges and drained accounts, all traced back to one app you barely remember installing.

A stranger sends you $1,000 out of nowhere, then asks for it back. It feels like the right thing to do, so you send it.

Here's what actually happened: that money came from a stolen card, disguised as a protected payment. Once the real cardholder notices, the payment reverses too, straight out of your balance. You end up covering both sides.

If this happens to you, save everything before you do anything else: their phone number, username, profile link, the transaction ID, the bank they're using, and screenshots of the full conversation. Without it, there's nothing to trace the Scammer back to.

That “refund” call sounds completely legitimate. That’s exactly the problem.

A calm voice, a real-looking charge, an agent who even catches a fake red flag to earn your trust, then all he needs is your card number and the code on the back. That’s the entire scam. No hacking, no malware, just someone convincing enough that you hand it over yourself.

The tell to remember: a real refund never needs your full card number or CVV. The company issuing it already has that on file.
