It is with sadness that I relay the news of the death of our Professor, Dr. Don Gable, on Monday, December 29, 2014. For the last the two years, Don has suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a disease that is both incurable and untreatable. These final days have been difficult ones for Don as his physical condition slowly ebbed.
A memorial service is being planned for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9 in Blades Chapel. More details will be provided when they are finalized.
Don grew up in Nebraska and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Later, he earned a M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Don spent much of his professional career as a technology consultant to corporations such as IBM and Ameritech. Don joined the UD faculty in January of 2007. While at UD, he taught a variety of CIS courses and served as chair of the CIS department. He retired in May of 2013, after 6 ½ years on the UD faculty, but continued to serve the University though a variety of programming projects. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Don knew him to be gracious and dedicated in all that he did. He cared deeply about his students and colleagues. We have missed his presence among us this these last two years and celebrate the impact he had on this place.
Don is survived by his wife, JoAnn and son, Mark. Condolences may be sent to:
