We recently deep-cleaned a DIRTY launch-model PlayStation 3 CECH-AO1
These original PS3's are special because they are able to play game disks from both PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 consoles.
They are also notorious for suffering from the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD), something that newer models are much less likely to contract. However, newer models of PS3 are not backwards-compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.
This console was purchased in 2006 (20 years ago!) and had never been opened for cleaning or replacing the thermal paste so it was high time to take care of it!
As time goes on more of these coveted launch-model PS3's suffer from the YLOD and are rendered effectively useless. It is nearly inevitable that every console from this generation will eventually get the YLOD.
HOWEVER, there is a permanent fix! (We are not currently offering this service, though) It's called the "Frankenstein Mod". It involves replacing the graphics processing chip (RSX) with a chip from a newer generation of PS3. This is arguable the most difficult and technical electronics repair that exists, and few people are able to achieve it reliably.
This is a fascinating documentary on the YLOD and how the Frankenstein Mod was discovered https://youtu.be/Za7WTNwAX0c?si=lS6c8Nf7HpqIGtek
This is another video of the same guy "RIP Felix", the GOAT of Frankenstein Mods, doing the mod on his console https://youtu.be/1cfwjtGMBrI?si=O6hgen2wkY8hYxhR
This is the start of a series where a normal person learns to swap the RSX chip and all the struggles he encounters along the way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJKrP3qdlFo&pp=ygUnYW1hdGV1ciBlbGVjdHJvbmljcyByZXBhaXIgZnJhbmtlbnN0ZWlu
