How do you know when you’ve rinsed your hydro dipped piece long enough? 🔦 Hydrokon takes some of the guesswork out of hydro dipping.

Our printable PVA film has a built-in fluorescent indicator. Shine a UV blacklight on the dipped part during rinsing. If you still see a bluish-white glow, PVA residue remains. Keep rinsing until the glow is gone.

It’s one of the small details built into Hydrokon film to help make your process more consistent.

Pigment or latex ink: Which is the better choice for printing Hydrokon Water Transfer Film? Both can deliver sharp, successful hydrographic transfers, but the workflows are different. Pigment ink typically requires a light protective coating before dipping, while latex ink often provides a simpler print, dry, and dip process.

Our latest blog breaks down the advantages of each option, common problems to avoid, troubleshooting tips, and best practices for creating a consistent in-house printing workflow. Head to the comments for the link to the full blog post.

Decals, wraps, and UV printing all have their place, but they are not always the best fit for complex 3D parts. When graphics need to flow across curves, edges, recesses, ribs, grips, or molded details, printable hydrographic film can offer a cleaner and more uniform finish.

Our latest blog post breaks down when printable hydrographic film may be a better production solution than decals, wraps, or UV printing, especially for industrial parts, branded housings, tools, equipment components, and short-run customization.

Prep is important! Here are five common prep mistakes that cause failures when hydrodipping:

▪️Skipping soap-and-water wash and jumping straight to solvents
▪️Using one dirty rag to “clean” the whole part
▪️Leaving shiny areas that never got scuffed
▪️Touching parts with bare hands after final wipe
▪️Rushing primer/basecoat cure times

Trying to decide whether to print custom hydrographic film in house or order pre-printed patterns? It really comes down to what kind of work your shop sells most. Many successful shops use a hybrid approach, keeping pre-printed film for standard work and printing custom jobs in house when speed, flexibility, and branding matter most. Hydrokon Water Transfer Film fits that model by helping shops take on higher margin custom work without being limited by outside inventory or long lead times.

Seams are one of the quickest ways to make a hydro dip look homemade, but most seam problems start in the artwork, not the tank. In our latest blog post, we break down how to print truly seamless patterns for hydro dipping so large parts look continuous and professional. You’ll learn what actually causes visible seams, how to build a repeat that tiles pixel-perfect (with proper bleed and a quick test strip), which repeat styles hide joins best, and how to plan seam placement, scale, and tank consistency to keep the join from showing. Hydrokon is a PVA-based water transfer film, so the way you store it directly impacts how consistently it prints and activates during dipping. For repeatable year-round results, keep film in a controlled environment at 65°–75°F (18°–24°C) and 35–55% relative humidity, store it sealed in the original foil packaging, and reseal opened rolls tightly after each use. Store rolls level with edges protected, keep them away from sunlight, heat sources, vents, doors, and windows, and let film acclimate while still sealed if it has been exposed to hot or cold conditions to help prevent curling, wrinkling, tackiness, brittleness, and uneven activation.
