Is your laptop splitting apart when you open it? If so, this is what is probably going on inside. One of the most common laptop issues is these rivets breaking out of the plastic leaving the hinge attached to nothing. No worries, it can be fixed in a few different ways:
A) replace the LCD lid entirely (expensive, good as new)
B) epoxy the rivets back in place (inexpensive, will never be as strong as original)
C) mad max steam punk awesomeness (inexpensive, better/stronger than the original, maybe a little funny looking)
Pictured is obviously option C, where the entire backplate is now supporting the hinge instead of just a tiny brass donut gently hugged by cheap plastic. This one only took a couple hours to complete.
How do you avoid this in the first place? Of course avoid impacts, but also remember the hinge is designed with a certain amount of inertia so that it can hold position. If you are whipping open the laptop and slapping it shut, the hinge will only move so fast and all that excess force is just wrestling the tiny brass donut from the grip of the cheap plastic. Open and close your laptop smoothly and gently.
TL;DR don't break your hinge. But if you do, call me, I got you 😉
