Tonight's Conversation:
I received a call from a member of a family whom I had the pleasure of doing their family reunion shirts for the 5th year. lol...
This Happened....
A family reunion was coming up and the family committee posts:
“Okay family! Reunion shirts are $20. Orders due by Friday!”
Here come the comments. 😂
“$20 for a T-shirt?!”
“I’m not buying no shirt I’m only gonna wear one time.”
“Why we gotta have shirts for EVERYTHING?”
“I got enough T-shirts already.”
Okay. Cool. Nobody argues. Nobody forces them to order.
Reunion day comes. (this past weekend)
Everybody starts pulling up.
Grandma has on hers.
The aunties have theirs.
The cousins are matching.
The kids are running around in theirs.
Everybody takes that BIG family picture together.
And guess who walks over?
The same person who didn't order one.
“You got any extras?”
😂😂😂
Now the lady who ordered says:
“Nope. I only ordered what was paid for.”
Now they're mad.
“Dang! You should've brought some extras!”
EXTRAS?! 😭😂
You JUST said you weren't paying $20 for a shirt you were only going to wear one time!
Fast-forward she says to me, Pooh, what if my Grandma pass away. or an aunt or uncle in that picture pass. Some of those little kids get grown with families of their own.
And somebody finds that old reunion picture.
Suddenly, nobody is talking about the $20 T-shirt.
They're saying:
“Awww…look at Grandma.”
“Look how little the kids were!”
“I remember that day.”
“We had so much fun.”
“I still have my shirt!”
And THAT'S the part people sometimes miss.
It's not about the T-shirt.
That shirt became attached to a memory.
And for you Pooh, you made it! You didn't just grab a shirt and magically put something on it. You created the design, ordered the blanks, purchased the prints, prepared the shirts, pressed them one by one, packaged them and made sure everybody had theirs.
So when people see you selling customized shirts for a birthday, reunion, trip, church event, community celebration, memorial or holiday... People don't have to buy one.
But don't knock the people who do and don't knock the small business that creates them. That's all I'm saying Pooh. My cousin really made me mad, she said.
I said yea you right because today you may see “just another T-shirt.” but ten years from now, you might see a memory you can still hold in your hands.
And THAT'S why I do what I do.
