Here is a recent commission to create a Heavy Metal VHS cover design inspired from a Heavy Metal themed soap bar label I created a few years back for Stovepipesgrimerewind. There are some obvious homages to Motörhead, and the Heavy Metal animated film from 1981.

Here is drawing I have been been periodically tinkering with just for fun over the year inspired by the book Fight Club. Space Monkeys are the loyal, brainwashed foot soldiers of the character Tyler Durden’s underground terrorist organization, Project Mayhem.

I first read this novel out of high school beginning college. I remember the time being so formative, seeking and finding authors outside of what I was assigned to read like Chuck Palaniuk, Bret Easton Ellis, Nick Hornby, and Jeffrey Eugenides. Hanging with friends widening my exposure to established and independent film directors making work that was left to interpretation. Music hall shows and trading burned cd’s of bands to check out.

These days its so hard to not get wrapped up in the “Why am I making something?” “I should make work that will get an audience.” “I need to make work that will allow me to post every day to beat the algorithm.” “Is this on brand with my social media brand?”

For me it’s been good mentally to just make something I have stuck in my head and not worry about all that, though I certainly have my struggles with it. It’s a quiet way to say thank you to the author and all the authors out there that just write to tell stories and make us ponder the world through creativity. It’s a way to challenge myself artistically. It’s a way to just meditate and enjoy making something.

I think the tinkering may be done with this one. Anytime my daughter would see me working on this, she’d say, “You’re still drawing that monkey!?” When I called it complete, she immediately asked for a Capybara. So maybe that will be next.

No Ai was used for this illustration.
