Big News For Bluejay!!

One of the most beneficial features of BlueJay is the ability for drivers to communicate any mental health conditions to responding officers.

There has been national attention shifted to the way in which police officers interact and respond to individuals with mental health conditions. Oftentimes, police officers aren’t equipped with the proper training to de-escalate a situation involving a individual suffering from a mental health episode.

As a result of this national attention and a bill recently passed, the Oklahoma City Police Department underwent 40 hours of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to better help individuals suffering from a mental health crisis. By including mental health information in the BlueJay Driver Profile, certified CIT officers will be able to respond and provide the necessary care to attend to that person’s unique needs.

Through research, some members who are protected under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) prefer to not visually display their disability via a hanging sign or license plate as they fear it renders them vulnerable. BlueJay allows these drivers to safely communicate any disabilities to their officer.

For example, a driver whose BlueJay Driver Profile displays they have a hearing disability urges the engaging officer to be mindful and not assume the driver may be non-compliant if being instructed to get out of the car, or follow a verbal command.

Another vital de-escalation feature built into BlueJay is the opportunity to inform police officers of your first language. Being pulled over is an anxiety spiking situation; even more so when english is not your first language.

For example, if an individual’s BlueJay Driver Profile displays their first language is German, the officer is given the opportunity to provide the driver a translator in the moment. Knowing this information about the driver is before any interaction is held already to begins to relieve some of the anxiety and answer some of the unknown between both the officer and the driver.

This feature provides all officers with an opportunity to go above and beyond to accommodate drivers. Within the police officer’s patrol vehicle, there will be prompts and other suggestions to help deliver a thoughtful, tailored experience.

BlueJay users are encouraged to introduce BlueJay to friends and family. Users are also encouraged to create profiles for their loved ones who may not have the ability or means to do so themselves. This ensures these loved ones are safe on the road, as well.

For example, a son or daughter with a mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia is encouraged to sign this person up. By doing so, if this person is driving and has an episode relating to dementia, the engaging officer will know in advance and will be able to assist this person according to their needs.

It is understood there are situations where women feel uncomfortable being pulled over. Remote areas, late at night or even just an unfamiliar area can all be situations where women may feel uneasy being engaged in a traffic stop. When building BlueJay, these concerns were taken into deep consideration.

Alongside the confirmation of being over by a sworn officer, 24 hours after an interaction, BlueJay users will be prompted to complete “The BlueJay Driver Experience Questionnaire.” This questionnaire is uniquely constructed and will give women a sense of security knowing they can provide feedback on their police officer’s car-side manner and conduct.

All BlueJay Driver Experience Questionnaires are thoroughly reviewed and delivered to police departments regularly to ensure accountability.
