There is a very dangerous virus that has been floating around for over a year now, going by the name Cryptowall or CryptoLocker. This virus can encrypt all of your documents and files and then tries to force you to pay a "ransom", usually of at least $300, to unlock it. Once the files are encrypted it is very difficult to recover them without paying the ransom, and even then you aren't guaranteed to get your files back!
Even though this is an older virus, there are new "strains" of it that have been recently found that are even worse than the original, and harder to remove or detect.
The best defense against this virus is:
1.) Have a backup in place - have a recovery plan.
2.) Have a good antivirus package installed, and updated.
3.) Backup, backup, backup!
We can never stress this enough. Having a backup of important files on your PC is very important for reasons such as this.
