Knowing another reality

History:

In the Somali region of Ethiopia I taught children in the summer camp created by the organization I volunteered with, teaching them geometry, mathematics, English and a lot of sports. In the cities of Dire Dawa and Kibre Mengist I worked for the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, accompanying the sick, playing with children, training a soccer team, and carrying out artistic works, such as making crosses for two chapels in a Comboni mission.

I see this time as a precious gift that not everyone can enjoy. I grew in values, I learned to be grateful, not to take anything for granted or consider that I deserve what I have and above all, to exploit my opportunities to the fullest, no matter how small they may seem.

Get to know Ethiopia!

Ethiopia is a large country with two very different regions. In the north nature is green, fresh and abundant like in a jungle and in the south it is hot and arid like in the desert.

It is a very attractive country for volunteering because there is a lot of security, volunteers are always well received and because there are already many organizations with volunteer experiences who have been established for many years.

The country also offers a great variety of tourism, so volunteers can always take advantage of their trips and learn about Ethiopian culture by visiting the different regions.

We can be a little lost but we will always find people who leave their mark on us, helping us find our way. What better way than to leave a little of our own mark on other people.

How do you enjoy tourism at the same time you volunteer?

The curiosity to explore and know other places has always been an impulse with which we live, so we want to give you some tips that you can use while you volunteer. This will help you make the most of your opportunity and will let you spend a few days of your trip to enjoy and understand the culture in which your volunteer program is located.

During your volunteer trip, you can enjoy your free time and spend a few days getting to know the country you are visiting.

Organize your schedule from your arrival at your organization. Understand where you are located. It’s a good idea to bring an agenda or travel log.
Investigate where you will be while volunteering, and know what’s nearby. Ask the locals for places they can recommend you to visit. This is a good opportunity to join the community.
Find people to go sightseeing with, whether it’s with other volunteers from your group or other locals that work with your program. It will make your visit more comfortable and enjoyable, in addition to making it more secure!
If you want to take pictures of people doing some work or activity, as if it were something exotic, first ask them if they give you their permission. People in general don't like to have a camera pointed at them without asking.
Take cash with you, but not much and in small bills.
There are some cultures that still like to barter, exchanging one object in for another, so it is always a good idea to take something with you that can help you get what you want. First, find out what objects are usually accepted.
