Hi everyone — I want to give you a transparent update about RAM (memory) and SSDs (solid-state drives).

Due to industry-wide supply constraints and sharp price increases, we will not be selling packaged RAM or SSDs at retail for the foreseeable future. Increased demand from AI/data center buildouts is pulling manufacturing capacity toward those channels and tightening availability (and raising costs) in the consumer/retail market.

What this means:

First, any RAM/SSD stock we can obtain at a reasonable cost (and what we have on hand) will be reserved for repairs, business contract clients, and warranty obligations.

Second, pricing for RAM/SSD used in repairs or upgrades will be based on market pricing at the time of service, because our wholesale costs are changing quickly.

Third, we’re already seeing major increases in RAM (roughly a 350% increase in our cost since August 2025), and we expect SSD pricing to jump 200-300% in the near term (possibly within the next month or two). If that happens, some repairs/upgrades may not be cost-effective compared to replacing a device, although the price of new devices may begin to increase significantly as well.

I’ll do my best to help customers navigate these changes, and we’ll continue to be upfront about what’s worth repairing versus what isn’t. That said, it may be a year or two before prices normalize. And because a high percentage of the repairs we perform may be affected by these increases, we don’t rule out scaling back our retail business significantly in the next 6–12 months if pricing and availability don’t improve.

RAM crisis just intensified as a report shows DDR5 is now 4.4x pricier than half a year ago.

Ensuring that everyone knows how much of a dork the owner was (who am I kidding, I still am one) as a teen, I submit the following newspaper article. I started my involvement with this hobby in 1987 at age 12. You might think one of my parents was technically inclined and helped me out with things like this. You'd be incorrect. This was almost all my own doing, though I was fortunate to have several mentors take me under their wings along the way.

The company that became ComputAbility in 2004 was originally registered in 1995. The boss is celebrating??? thirty years in business this year. He'd been building custom computers for several years by that point. Here's a pricing sheet from May of 1995, just a few months before Windows 95 was released.
