We’re proud to share a special Shawnee Communications tradition! Every year, our employees come together to select and support local charities that make a real difference in our communities. Our employees lead the way with their donations, which are then matched by our shareholders—and matched again by Shawnee Communications as a company. Our 2025 donations totaled over $13,000 for two great organizations.

Founded in 2022, Down the Leash is a veteran-run nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Southern Illinois veterans successfully transition to and thrive in civilian life. Since its inception, the organization has trained 15 service dogs and supported more than 60 veterans and their family members through the program. In addition to being a 501(c)(3) charity focused on service animal training, Down the Leash is also a su***de prevention group.

The Lovington Working Women’s Collective is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower women and community members in Lovington by fostering a supportive community through resources, collaboration, and a grant program. In late 2024 and 2025, the LWWC connected Lovington schools, daycare, and community organizations with $76,000 in grants.

If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. This adage applies to streaming devices offering free access to live sports, movies, and other popular programming that typically requires a TV or streaming subscription. These devices stream pirated content and may come pre-loaded with malware. You may also be asked to disable standard security protections, leaving you vulnerable to hackers. Stay away!

Storing Up Trouble

In this week’s scam, you receive a text message from your phone’s cloud storage provider. The message says your cloud storage is full and warns you that all your photographs and videos will be deleted if you don’t upgrade your storage immediately. The message prompts you to select a link to upgrade your plan.

But this text is from cybercriminals trying to scare you! If you select the link in the text, you’ll be taken to a fake web page and instructed to enter your credit card information so you can “upgrade” your storage. If you enter your credit card information here, cybercriminals will steal it!

Follow these tips to avoid falling victim to a phishing scam:
• If you receive a text message about your cloud storage being full, don’t reply or select any links in the message. Instead, open your cloud storage app or visit the official website to confirm that the message is legitimate.
• Remember that cybercriminals often try to trick you into acting impulsively by creating a sense of urgency. Always be cautious if you receive a text message that instructs you to act quickly!
• If you receive a suspicious text message, you can report it to your phone’s service provider. This report will help them block similar messages for everyone.

We were finally able to deliver and assemble our 12 Days prize at the Vienna Carnegie Public Library. Librarian Margaret Mathis expressed her appreciation for replacing the old Army surplus chairs with new computer chairs.
