It's understandable that the ADA Title II web accessibility compliance deadline extension feels like a relief for many public agencies. Bringing large, multi-department digital ecosystems into conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA is genuinely complex work. The original timeline was ambitious, and the budgets and technical backlogs are serious obstacles.
However, the extension doesn't change the underlying requirements or reasoning behind them. One in four adults in the U.S. lives with a disability. Inaccessible government websites aren't just an inconvenience, but a barrier to housing assistance, civic participation, education and the everyday systems that should be designed to serve everyone.
The organizations that will be in the best position in 2027 are the ones treating the extension as time to do the work right and with the dignity their users deserve.
