It’s National Slam the Scam Day! As part of Consumer Protection Week, officials are helping the public feel empowered to combat fraud by learning to watch for the “4 P’s”:
Pretend - Scammers will pose as trusted individuals or entities. Look carefully for numbers and emails that you recognize, and if anything seems off, follow up using a trusted form of contact.
Problem/Prize - Scammers will try to override your common sense by creating a sense of urgency, either claiming an emergency or a “too good to be true” offer.
Pressure - Any push to act immediately without verification should be eyed with suspicion.
Payment - Real requests for payment will almost never come in the form of gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. Beware of links that they ask you to use instead of your usual payment channels.
