Such a heartbreaking tragedy. Our thoughts are with the Gloucester fishing community as they grieve the loss of the F/V Lily Jean crew. This loss is a powerful reminder of the dangers commercial fishermen face and how quickly things can change at sea. We have the deepest respect for the men and women who put their lives on the line each day to provide for their families and communities. May the crew of the F/V Lily Jean rest in peace.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Gloucester fishing community following the tragic loss of the seven crew members of the F/V Lily Jean, Captain, Accursio “Gus” Sanfilippo, Paul Beal Sr., his son, Paul Beal Jr., John Paul Rousanidis, 33, Freeman Short, 31, Sean Therrien and federal observer Jada Samitt, 22, of Virginia on Friday, January 30, 2026. We especially honor the Captain, whose leadership and responsibility for vessel and crew reflect the profound weight carried by those who command at sea. Their loss is a solemn reminder of the extraordinary risks faced by commercial fishermen—men and women who head out in unforgiving conditions so others may be fed. Commercial fishing remains one of the most dangerous professions in the world, demanding courage, skill, and sacrifice. May the memories of these seven lives be a blessing, and may their families find strength, comfort, and support in the days ahead.
