United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) partnered with Airbnb.org, a nonprofit founded by Airbnb to provide emergency housing in times of crisis including fires.

Blake Pang, President and CEO of the nonprofit UWNNS, said having a place to sleep shouldn’t be another thing impacted families should have to worry about.

Those eligible can apply by contacting community partners such as Catholic Charities, Nevada 211, American Red Cross of Northern Nevada, Washoe County School District’s Family Resource Centers and Nevada Area Council.

No one cares about backups… well, until the exact second they suddenly care a whole lot. They’re not fancy, and they’re not exciting. Mostly, they just hide in the background, offering a little peace of mind, usually untested and unconfirmed.

A backup is simply a snapshot in time, a fallback point that often comes with some data loss. But if your site takes a dump today, gets hacked, or the server crashes… that little snapshot can become the savior of what is, in the bigger technical picture, a pretty small disaster.

Wait, you mean that little robot backup may not work when I need it most? Exactly. It happens even to the big guys. GitLab once discovered during a major outage that none of their five backup/replication methods were working! They eventually recovered from a backup about six hours old. What would happen if you had to restore from a backup a month old?

That’s why “a backup exists” and “I know I can restore this thing” are two very different sentences.
