Dr. Gonzalo Mateos, Professor of Animal Science at the University of Madrid in Spain and study co-author, first presented findings from the meta-analysis at the U.S. Soybean Export Council's (USSEC) Asia Trade Exchange to 850 U.S. Soy customers and soybean industry representatives. This pioneering compilation of research is the most comprehensive quality review of soybean meal that has ever been conducted, and it gives customers greater clarity around soybean meal quality from different countries of origin.

"Our company was thrilled to participate in this groundbreaking research conducted by the U.S. Soybean Export Council," said Peter Schott, CEO and Co-Founder of Genesis Feed Technologies. "We hope that buyers take note of the results, purchase more U.S. soy and see a significant reduction in their feed costs. This NVC analyzes economic nutritional value of soybean meals from different origins to give traders and buyers a platform to connect with nutritionists directly to better inform their feed investments."

Northern US soy quality prevails with .2-.3% foreign materials and 15% total sum of amino acids in the U of M's 2021 Soy Quality Report.

"Typically, whole soybeans and soybean meal have been valued largely on crude protein quantity, but through the use of checkoff funds, we're working to change the language of soybean quality, focusing more on essential amino acids and its impact on our customers.", says Patrick O'Leary, chair of Northern Soy Marketing (NSM), a farmer-led board formed by the soybean checkoff organizations of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.

O'Leary says this research is being communicated to international customers and end-users through NSM. One of the goals of the group is to shift soybean value paradigm from crude protein to nutritional value. "This Soy Quality Report is a critical resource when promoting our soybeans overseas," O'Leary says. "It's just one more supporting document we can use to highlight the true quality of our beans."

Traceability brings checks and balances to a farm's integrity surrounding sustainable practices, provides a feedback loop to promptly react to recalls and biosecurity threats, and provides valuable data to optimize future operations. It changes your farm's culture, and the way the team thinks about doing the jobs; it serves as the connective tissue to the consumer.

Sproule Farms shares their journey about becoming certified in a traceable world and what that encompasses in Successful Farming below:

How does precision ag pair with the efforts of sustainable production?

Precision farming using GPS technology lets farmers plant seed and apply nutrients and pesticides at prescribed rates with exact placement. This approach reduces drifting and run-off of excess inputs, protecting the surrounding environment and natural resources. Precision technology also lessens the number of times equipment must cross a field, reducing fuel usage, emissions and soil compaction.

By analyzing data insights from previous seasons, farmers are then enabled to optimize their operations and make modifications in irrigation, soil nutrition, and plant protection, resulting in higher efficiencies and higher quality yields.

ADM set an ambitious goal to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25%, energy intensity by 15%, water intensity by 10%, and achieve a 90% landfill diversion rate, all by 2035.

Designing supply chain spaces (like feed mills) to accommodate these goals makes a huge impact on energy usage. Layout optimization for energy consumption is front and center for ADM, according to Ryan Lane, president of animal nutrition North America. "When we engage with any of our partners that help us with the pre-engineering of a facility, we look at the logistics of the plant, how everything will move around, and its impact on energy use, water use and waste management," Lane says.

Learn why feed mill owners have been citing energy efficiency as a top priority more frequently when commissioning a greenfield facility or renovation project.
