Same board layout, completely different brain—and a blown power section! 🧠⚡💥
At first glance, these control boards look 100% identical. But the microcontrollers tell the real story:
MSF Ver2.0 = Master Set Freezer 🥶
MSR Ver2.0 = Master Set Refrigerator 🥦
The thermistor lookup tables, temperature setpoints, and trip limits are hardcoded directly into that firmware. When you drop a freezer board into a refrigerator, the hardware fits, but the brain thinks it’s cooling a sub-zero compartment—locking out standard fridge temps (34°F–40°F).
Why did the original board fail?
🔥 Root Cause: The main compressor relay (RY1). Heavy inductive inrush currents from constant compressor cycling created a high-resistance joint. The resulting thermal runaway and high-voltage arcing literally vaporized the solder pad and copper trace!
🛡️ The Good News: Thanks to galvanic isolation between the relay’s AC contacts and DC coil, the high-voltage destruction stayed contained on the power side. The 5V logic rail was saved, leaving the precious MSR Ver2.0 MCU completely untouched.
The Fix: A clean chip transplant. Desoldering the MSR Ver2.0 MCU from the scorched board and dropping it onto the healthy donor board restored original fridge firmware to clean, working hardware. 🛠️✨
