As summer comes to an end, a lot of small offices around here are settling back into their full routine. It's a good time to take ten minutes and check the one computer in your office that everyone depends on.
In many small businesses, there's one ordinary desktop acting as the server — holding the shared files, the QuickBooks company file, or the main office database. If that single machine goes down, the whole office stops working until it gets sorted out.
Before the busy fall season gets fully underway, it's worth confirming two quick things about that machine:
1. Does it have an automated backup running?
2. Has anyone actually tried restoring a file from that backup recently to prove it works?
An unverified backup often turns out to have stopped running months ago, and nobody finds out until the day they need it.
If you're not sure how yours is set up, or if you want a second pair of eyes on your office setup, let me know. I am Fred Conover, Senior Consultant at FMC Networking. I have been doing this work since 1996. I handle Windows PC repair, Microsoft 365, email issues, virus cleanup, small-office networks, etc.
I work evenings and weekends, so local businesses do not have to lose a working day to IT problems — we handle it after you close, and Monday morning everything works. Onsite across Burlington and Mercer Counties, and lower Bucks County across the bridge. Remote support anywhere.
