How to Stay Safe from Scammers: 10 Steps Everyone Should Follow

In today’s digital age, scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting people through phone calls, emails, texts, and social media. Whether it's a phishing email that looks like it's from your bank or a fake online store offering unbelievable deals, scams can cost victims both money and peace of mind. Fortunately, there are clear and practical steps you can take to protect yourself.

1. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Contact
If someone reaches out to you unexpectedly—especially asking for money, personal information, or urgent action—take a step back. Scammers often create false urgency to pressure you into acting without thinking.

2. Verify the Source
Before clicking a link or sharing information, confirm the legitimacy of the source. Call the organization directly using an official phone number (not one they give you). Check email addresses and URLs carefully—many scammers use addresses that mimic real ones.

3. Don’t Share Personal Information
Never give out personal or financial information over the phone, email, or text unless you are 100% sure who you're dealing with. Legitimate companies won’t ask for sensitive information through insecure channels.

4. Use Strong Passwords and Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Create strong, unique passwords for each of your online accounts. Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security, even if your password is compromised.

5. Beware of “Too Good to Be True” Offers
Scams often promise large rewards with little effort—such as free vacations, sudden inheritances, or miracle products. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

6. Keep Your Software Up to Date
Regularly update your devices and software to fix security vulnerabilities. Outdated software can leave you open to malware or spyware used by scammers to steal your data.

7. Monitor Financial Statements and Credit Reports
Check your bank and credit card statements regularly for unauthorized transactions. Consider placing fraud alerts or credit freezes if you suspect identity theft.

8. Educate Yourself and Others
Stay informed about the latest scams by following trusted sources like the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) or your local consumer protection agency. Share what you learn with friends and family—especially older relatives who are often targeted.

9. Use Secure Connections
Avoid logging into sensitive accounts using public Wi-Fi. If necessary, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt your connection and protect your data from hackers.

10. Report Suspicious Activity
If you suspect you’ve been targeted or scammed, report it immediately to:

-The FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov

-Your bank or credit card company

Local law enforcement
Reporting scams helps protect others and may help authorities catch the culprits.

Final Thoughts

Scammers thrive on confusion and fear, but with awareness and caution, you can stay a step ahead. Make it a habit to pause, verify, and protect. A few extra seconds of skepticism could save you from becoming the next victim.

🚨 Beware of Scams and Scammers! 🚨

Hey everyone, I wanted to take a moment to talk about something important: protecting ourselves from scams and scammers. With the rise of online interactions, it's more crucial than ever to be vigilant and aware of the warning signs. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Too Good to be True: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts and don't fall for promises of easy money or unbelievable deals.

Urgency and Pressure: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to make you act quickly without thinking. Be cautious of high-pressure tactics and take your time to research and verify before making any decisions.

Requests for Personal Information: Legitimate organizations will never ask for sensitive personal information like your Social Security number, bank account details, or passwords over unsolicited calls or emails. Be wary of any such requests.

Unsolicited Communications: Be cautious of unsolicited emails, messages, or phone calls, especially if they're offering unexpected prizes, lottery winnings, or asking for money upfront.

Poor Grammar and Spelling: Many scams originate from non-native English speakers, leading to poorly written emails or messages. If something looks unprofessional or contains numerous grammatical errors, it's likely a scam.

Research and Verify: Before making any transactions or sharing personal information, research the company or individual online. Check reviews, ratings, and official websites to ensure legitimacy.

Secure Transactions: When making online purchases or transactions, always ensure the website is secure (look for "https://" and a padlock symbol in the address bar) and use secure payment methods like credit cards or PayPal.

Remember, staying informed and cautious is key to protecting yourself from scams. If you encounter any suspicious activity, report it to the appropriate authorities immediately.

EXCITING NEW ADVENTURES!

We wanted to let you all know some great new things that have been going on for our family. During the past year so many things have changed for everyone, we are no exception to that.

The past year made us rethink everything about how our son is educated and what we want that to look like, so we ventured into homeschooling through a virtual platform and it has been great! This meant my wife, Joy was not able to continue working outside the home. We also decided to renovate our garage to create our NEW office space! We have been busy this past year finding ways to adapt to our new normal.

So, we decided to add a little something...a NEW business! We are excited to officially introduce Joy's new business:
FRANKLIN PIKE BOOKKEEPING

We are blessed to be working together and feel we have so much more to offer our customers with this addition.

Stay tuned for some fun looks back through our renovation process......

We look forward to serving all of our customers in whatever needs you may have with computers, networking, technology and now bookkeeping!
