Let's talk about spam for a minute. If you have an email address, even if it simply exists and you use it for nothing, you've still probably got some emails in your spam folder by now. Sometimes they're obviously a scam and well worth discarding, other times it can be hard to really tell. I've added a great image from Crowdstrike which is a fantastic resource for digital security, especially in the enterprise / business world. Attention to detail is the name of the game here. If an email SEEMS to be from a legitimate address, but you cant quite tell, if you're up to it, you can look up the "domain" which is the part to the right of the @ portion of the email address. Go Daddy has a great resource for this, its called a whois lookup. This essentially lets you see some detailed information about that domain. One key indicator that the email is fraudulent is the registration date or creation date. If its claiming to be from a well established, reputable, organization like Microsoft in this example, but it shows it was created a couple of months ago, chances are its fake. The number one step you can take is just slow down, pay attention to the details. The example image I've posted breaks down some of components and what seems to be off. Feel free to use it as a template of sorts to help you sort through your own inbox. As always, if you need help with your technology needs, whether its for your home or small business then I'm the guy you should be talking to, reach out and lets see what I can do for you.
