Happy NATIONAL DOG DAY from Nori and Kaiso LePere!

National Dog Day on August 26 encourages dog ownership of all breeds. While seeking a new companion, be sure to consider mutts, mixes, purebreds, and everything in between.

Whether mixed or purebred, embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe, and abuse-free life. They all give us companionship. Additionally, they keep us safe, and they aid those in need. Dogs play. Well, they play many roles in our lives, too! They keep us healthy, both physically and mentally.

While many days aim to find loving homes for dogs, this day expands that consideration to look beyond the breed. Look into the heart of the animal. The purpose of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

Breeds
Purebreds are animals whose parents were both of the same breed. While the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes official breeds, not all dogs with parents from the same breed are considered official by the AKC. One benefit of purebred animals is that characteristics such as behavior and size are predictable.

With mixed breed animals, the genetics becomes uncertain, and some of the predictability is lost. However, when it comes to choosing a dog to add to your family or for training one to join a team, both purebred and mixed breeds may still fit the bill. Both types of dogs, young and old, find their way to shelters.

Many popular breeds fill shelters due to recent films or television shows. Families buy an animal imagining they will make the perfect pet but are unprepared for the training, care, and other responsibilities that come with canine care. Regardless of their genetics, all dogs require care and training. If there's a particular breed that has captured your heart, check the shelters. You might be surprised to find either a purebred or one that is a mix of the kind you're fond of.
When dogs find a forever home, their companionship creates lifelong benefits. They bring with them joy, loyalty, and devotion. Eventually, no matter the breed, these pets become family.

NATIONAL COAST GUARD DAY
National Coast Guard Day on August 4 celebrates and honors the courageous work of the service members of Coast Guard. Today, we salute all Coast Guard members, active and inactive, for their service to our country.

The United States Coast Guard is one of the six branches of the United States Armed Forces. While this maritime service is a branch of the military, they are also a multi-missioned service. During peacetime, it operates under the Department of Homeland Security. However, their responsibilities can be transferred to the US Navy by the President of the United States at any time deemed necessary, or by Congress during wartime.
The first Coast Guard aviators graduated from Pensacola Naval Aviation Training School in 1917. Aviation is still the largest large part of the Coast Guard's security, enforcement, and defense readiness.

Always ready to protect our shores and waterways, the Coast Guard provides more than search and rescue. They are a large part of the nation's navigation system and Marine Environmental Protection.

When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of America, the US Coast Guard saved over 33,500 lives. Their maritime efforts rescued an estimated 24,000 lives from peril in severely dangerous conditions.

Since 1790, service members have been at the ready to provide support, whatever the mission. Their commitment continues today.

NATIONAL COAST GUARD HISTORY
The United States Coast Guard traces its founding to an act of Congress on August 4, 1790. The Coast Guard consisted of 10 vessels that carried out the enforcement of various trade and humanitarian duties.

NATIONAL MUTT DAY
National Mutt Day encourages us to embrace, save and celebrate mixed breed dogs. This fur-eindly celebration is so popular, we celebrate twice a year--July 31st and December 2nd.

Desperately longing for a new home, millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs in shelters wait for someone to come and adopt them. National Mutt Day provides an excellent opportunity to find the perfect canine companion. Despite the name, a mutt learns, obeys and trains much like purebred animals. While their lineage cannot be traced and their features are a bit murky, their companionship will be faithful.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. When these abandoned and often abused animals find their way to a shelter, each one needs a forever home. Whether you know it or not, their potential is limitless. Some of the benefits of adoption are often hidden, like owner and dog both enjoying increased physical activity and social interaction while on daily walks. Humans develop patience and their four-legged companion learns to trust and respect new limits. For example, as dogs explore the many scents of the human lifestyle, they usually discover shoes are off-limits.

Shelters always welcome donations and volunteers. Dogs love walking, playing and being loved even if they haven’t found their forever home. Every moment they spend socializing increases their opportunity for adoption.

No matter the breed, size or demeanor of the human, er, canine, the shelter will take the time to find the right home for their animals. They schedule visits and have procedures in place to promote healthy adoptions for families and individuals. While some dogs experience injury or illness, the shelters work with veterinarians to heal the animals before making them available for adoption.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL MUTT DAY
Visit a shelter; if you are unable to adopt a dog, you can always volunteer.

Volunteer to be a foster for a mutt waiting for adoption.

Donate money or supplies to a local shelter. Shelters always need blankets, dog dishes, crates, puppy pads, and food.

All American Pet Photo Day encourages pet owners to share their favorite pet photos on July 11. Be sure to charge your camera and be prepared to take adorable pictures of your furry pal!

Whether they are the four-legged furry kind or come from the more serpentine species, click away. Birds and fish, pigs and equine, canine and feline should all get in line for their favorite pose. If they are friends, take a few snapshots of them together! On All American Pet Photo Day, every pet gets included.

When it comes to capturing the perfect image of your loyal pal, it might take some effort. Like humans, some furry and not so furry friends are camera shy. A pocketful of treats helps ease them into the shot. If bribery doesn't work, sometimes exercise before the photoshoot will. Another option is misdirection. Focus their attention on another area beyond the lens of the camera, and you might get the picture you want. If all else fails, wait until your sweet companion falls asleep and click away. They're at their cutest when they're resting anyway.
Remember to keep your pet safe and comfortable. Don't let your pet become overheated or over-anxious. A stressed pet won't take a good photo. Defer to your pet's temperament, toss out the costumes, and accept the blurred selfie.

5 WAYS TO SNAP THE PERFECT PIC ON AMERICAN PET PHOTO DAY
1. Keep a pocketful of high-value treats or a squeaky toy right next to the camera lens to easily guide your pet's attention and capture those alert, perky expressions.
2. If your pet is too hyper to stay still, take them for a quick walk or play a game of fetch before you start clicking away.
3. Prioritize your pet's comfort. If they look stressed or unhappy in an outfit, toss the clothes aside—natural photos are always the best photos.
4. Take advantage of natural window light indoors, or head outside during the "golden hour" (just after sunrise or right before sunset) for beautiful, soft lighting.
5. Browse the tag to admire everyone else's furry, feathered, or scaled friends and drop a few likes and comments to spread the joy.
