Surge protection during (and after) the storm.



Hurricanes and tropical storms lead to lots of questions about surge protection, so we’re going to take a moment to go over some options for protecting your equipment. There are 3 main avenues for surge to damage your devices: electrical, internet, and low voltage cabling (data lines, alarm lines, camera lines, etc). Electrical surges can be caused by issues at the power generations plant, lightning, or even malfunctioning devices in your home. Internet and low voltage typically come from lightning, and it doesn’t even have to hit the line! Lightning strikes several miles away can fry computers, alarm systems, camera systems, and even TVs. Luckily, there are several ways to remediate these issues. For high voltage, use surge protection on any valuable device, and battery backups on devices sensitive to fluctuations. You can also unplug devices during bad storms provided they are easily accessible. We also provide whole home panel surge protectors, but make sure you still use smaller units for individual devices! For internet and low voltage, we offer a variety of devices from Ditek, Total Protection Solutions, and more! No matter the device, we have a solution to protect it.

Hurricane preparedness technical tips: Home Edition!

1. Check any outdoor devices, ensure that they are securely fastened and in good condition.
2. If you have solar panels or lights, consider removing the solar panel or folding it down for a flatter wind profile.
3. Get any items like subwoofers or computers elevated off the floor.
4. Save important files from your PC to a thumb drive or other portable storage you can take with you
5. Power down battery backups (this usually requires holding power button for a few seconds) and unplug devices you can easily reach.
6. If possible, cover outdoor electronics such as tv with plastic. This isn’t normally recommended, but is a good short term solution to protect from driving rain.
7. If using a generator after the storm, be judicious about what you plug into them. Generator power isn’t as “clean” as utility power and can damage sensitive electronics.
