Picture a manufacturing company chasing a real record: fastest aircraft in the world. Engineering is iterating on the design multiple times a week. Manufacturing is building against specs that keep moving under them. Everybody's working hard. The schedule keeps slipping anyway.
Nobody in that building is lazy. Nobody's incompetent. So where's the time actually going?
Almost always, it's the handoffs. Engineering releases a spec update. The shop floor doesn't get it in a usable form for another day and a half. In the meantime, they've kept building against last week's version, because stopping to double-check felt slower than just moving. A senior manufacturing lead who's been there since day one has become the actual system of record. When she's out, decisions slow to a crawl, because the real information was never written down anywhere else.
This is where we start every engagement: not with a fix, but with a clear picture of where the breakdown is actually happening.
**๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ณ๐.** Map the handoffs, not the departments. Where does information move from one group to another, and how long does it actually take to arrive in a usable form?
**๐ข๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ถ๐๐ฒ.** Once you can see the gap, you can usually close most of it without new tools. Faster spec propagation, a shared source of truth for part status, a way to capture what's living in one person's head.
That's the first half of the work.
