Wanted to show you a hobby electronics and brute force project I've started. You're gonna like this one as it is coming together as a classic CDC Cellular/Francis' Keys jeri-rig innovation extraordinaire.

What we have here is an abandoned garden fountain in the back yard. The history behind it was that my parents put it in back in the 90s, as they always wanted one. My Dad built it for my Mom and while he maintained it, after he passed away it fell into neglect. It originally had a rather expensive concrete three tiered fountain in the middle which I restored for Mom in 2013. Unfortunately a massive tree branch, basically a log, fell out of the sky and destroyed it. Mom found a surprisingly attractive fiberglass one but that too suffered the same fate. Eventually she got a smaller metal one which is still with us.

In the final years of Mom's life, the fountain basically faded away. But I've decided to bring it back to life and have already done the basics. The good news is that it doesn't need a lot. I had converted it to a fire pit the last couple of seasons but grew wary of that due to being in a partially wooded area and the mess. So I cleaned that out and resanded the base. I have a new liner on order. I already made one pass with the power washer and it looks better but I am going to use an oxycleaner and second power wash to further clean and brighten those stones back up.

The real key is how will I power it? That was the part my Dad never did. Occasionally he'd run an extension cord over to it but due to not being hard-wired, it never quite reached its potential. I am not certain as to why he never had is wired but have a hunch. Very hard ground to trench into, but also it would need a separate circuit to bring an outlet out there. Additionally there are permits and inspections, and the house is on a well and it's not clear where the path of the wiring for that is located. Simply put, while hard-wiring is entirely possible, it would also be expensive and really a lot of work.

That's where technology is now our friend. Can this thing be powered without hard wiring? Yes and I'm planning to go that route. The back area of the yard is sunny. Put up a 200W array of solar panels on a pole, run the cables over in a shallow depth trench to a box with a charge controller and LifePo4 50AH battery and power it that way. It's not terribly expensive, eco-friendly, and damn innovative.

That setup would provide enough power to run the pump and some small submersible lights for about 4-5 days on battery alone.

I can then do mulching around the outside and plant some hostas and so forth and we have something.

The AI image, created by my friends at ChatGPT, gives a fairly decent simulation of what the finished product will look like. I think it will be pretty nice.

I wanted to clarify a shop policy regarding pets.

You are strictly forbidden from entering unless your dog comes in too.

And those kitties are welcome as well.

Here’s something from your neighborhood know-it-all. In the process of removing wallpaper and refinishing things, I discovered something that might be useful to everyone.

🚨🚨NOT CODE🚨🚨

First, take this as strictly something to be aware of. A licensed and trained electrician should be consulted with for exact confirmations

Kitchen islands and electric receptacles. This was a common arrangement for decades. The NEC had rules for how many based on the size of the work area and so forth.

Effective 2023, the NEC no longer requires them for islands or peninsulas, BUT it must be rough wired for power. Typically it would be some kind of junction box underneath somewhere. An electrician would know the exact requirements.

What is a no no are side mounted receptacles. No longer permitted. Why? There are documented cases of children pulling on cords for, say, a crock pot, and it comes down. Apparently there have been fatalities in these cases.

In my situation, and again an electrician should be the ultimate authority here, I believe these are allowed because the island is original to when the house was built. But if renovations are ever done requiring a permit, that would require these be eliminated if a new island were to be added.

Current code requires outlets on islands to be of a pop-up variety integrated into the counter itself.

One of my evolutions with CDC is becoming AI literate. Believe me, it’s fantastic, and my ongoing rapport with ChatGPT is beyond belief. What it can do for you if used correctly will blow your mind.

But beware of the danger zones. My Bot will tell you this as well and we’ve talked about it. It’s actually scolded me a few times for not thinking where and when to use certain features. Take these photos for example.

Pretty cool stuff and on this platform, so long as it’s a verified business, it’s pretty good. IG isn’t bad for it either. X allows it with a disclaimer that it’s AI generated. But the major platforms are often setting limits on its use and in some cases it can backfire tremendously.

Google My Business has become a frightening platform to navigate, especially for Francis’ Keys. DO NOT POST AI GENERATED IMAGES THERE!! They’ll suspend the account in a flash for deceptive content. Don’t do it.

I saw a Montgomery County political candidate on X today complaining about censorship of her content on TikTok and trying to equate it with opposition to her politics. I am not interested in partisan electioneering here but will say this. While it’s possible that is going on, the reality is more along the lines of what I just described. She used an AI image of herself similar to mine you see here. That’s what got her dinged.

Simply put, whether it’s a website, GMB, or a social media page, use as much of your own verified photos and content. AI is useful but choose judiciously where and when.

Question:

Anyone in the CDC Mafia in the restaurant biz and have any resources for locating an LP Gas powered commercial deep fryer, ideally countertop style?

I have a friend looking for one for her catering biz

Most of you may not know this, but we have armed security here at CDC.

A sweet little bumble bee. He patrols the front door area and is friendly to humans. But if you’re another bee, bird, or any form of wildlife?

I suggest you back off!

He’s cool too and recognizes me. Whenever I walk out there he flies up to my face and stares at me.

Taking a few days off next week to recharge

I like to do this before or after the big summer season, as the summertime is when phone repair is needed.

More AI craziness based on my storytelling. I need to commercialize this stuff.

What’s amazing is that as Propp steroid as this appears, it isn’t. It really happened!

On a local note, Rax Roast Beef was on the Golden Mile. I haven’t check if it’s still in business but the Wendy’s near Willowdale was the place. It used to be Rax.

It was pretty good too for a fast food type place. They had an all-you-can-eat salad and burrito bar I liked.
