Here’s something from your neighborhood know-it-all. In the process of removing wallpaper and refinishing things, I discovered something that might be useful to everyone.
🚨🚨NOT CODE🚨🚨
First, take this as strictly something to be aware of. A licensed and trained electrician should be consulted with for exact confirmations
Kitchen islands and electric receptacles. This was a common arrangement for decades. The NEC had rules for how many based on the size of the work area and so forth.
Effective 2023, the NEC no longer requires them for islands or peninsulas, BUT it must be rough wired for power. Typically it would be some kind of junction box underneath somewhere. An electrician would know the exact requirements.
What is a no no are side mounted receptacles. No longer permitted. Why? There are documented cases of children pulling on cords for, say, a crock pot, and it comes down. Apparently there have been fatalities in these cases.
In my situation, and again an electrician should be the ultimate authority here, I believe these are allowed because the island is original to when the house was built. But if renovations are ever done requiring a permit, that would require these be eliminated if a new island were to be added.
Current code requires outlets on islands to be of a pop-up variety integrated into the counter itself.
The more you know…
