The google definition of Keloids seems so cold. "Keloids are firm, rubbery, or shiny fibrous nodules representing an overgrowth of scar tissue, extending beyond the original skin injury. They result from abnormal healing, often linked to collagen overproduction after acne, piercings, burns, or surgeries. Treatment includes steroid injections, cryotherapy, or laser therapy, though they are difficult to remove completely."
My first keloid was from getting hit by large rock as a kid, I must have been around 11 years old. From that point on, whenever I got a cut scrap or even a pimple there was a chance I would scar. That first keloid was on my collar bone and today the scar isn't really visible. The scars quickly shaped how I moved in the world and to this very day its something I live with but I do my best to cover them up.
Many years ago I envisioned showing these scars to the world and using the visuals as part art project and therapy. I saw it as a creative process to somehow get over the shame and discomfort in showing them. That idea was so long ago I forget when that original thought came into fruition. I know at one point my Mother did mention the fact that it would be visually interesting to do such a project. So here I am finally doing it and it feels surreal and very uncomfortable.
With all of that said, I will be sharing photos I taken recently and I will continue to share, create art & discuss my creative process. The intention is to be honest, love myself more, create compelling art and to document and discuss this process. I hope this encourages others to find their truth and love themselves as well. This is a very difficult thing to do and I'm ready to share and I thank everyone for the support on this journey..
