Visited a couple great local businesses this week.

First I helped out Kelly at Zion Preschool and Childcare Monday with a minor computer issue.

Then repaired an IP address issue at Dwain Johnson and Son’s Trucking on South 19th St in Clinton.

Tuesday, I made a quick stop at Fulton Dental Associates, then crossed the bridge to see the great folks at American Speedy Printing and then visited my good friends at Clinton Today’s Dental.

Did work at Solar on Earth in Chadwick today. Seems like a very forward thinking business trying to help families and businesses tackle ever rising energy costs. It was great working with their people and the campus is really cool.

Spent some time with Aaron Mitchell at Mitchell Repair today. He had been using the same pc for nearly 20 years for his plasma table and it finally died on him.

We found a good replacement and reinstalled his software so he can get back to what he does best, metal fabrication. Hopefully this one lasts another 20 years.

Paid a visit to Sarah and Cherish at the Felix Adler Discovery Center this morning. Did a quick fix on their pc and chatted a bit. My kids all have fond memories of playing there when they were younger, such a fun place for them to explore and use their imagination.

Learning Through Play Every Day at Clinton, Iowa's Children's Museum featuring hands-on exhibits, educational programs, birthday parties, events, and family fun.

Cleaned up two pcs today. One nearly had their bank account hacked, thankfully it was caught before anything was stolen.

Be very careful who you let remote control your computer. In a matter of minutes they can get access to passwords, or sensitive information.

Also did some initial setup on a new Lenovo Laptop for our awesome Fulton Fire Department.

This morning I cleaned two computers with similar symptoms.

Both computers had bad browser extensions. One led to downloading a rogue browser called Shift, another led to these fake virus notifications.

Rogue browsers can hijack search results and lead you to unsafe website. Fake notifications are a phishing scheme to try and get you to buy things you don’t need and expose your personal information to disreputable sites.

While these are not technically viruses they can pose a problem and are often quite intrusive.

Thankfully they are pretty easy to remedy and can almost always be resolved same day.

Be careful not to fall for the scams and be safe out there

Helped a nice lady this morning get back online after nearly 3 weeks of no service.

Occasionally equipment does fail, and in this case her modem died, probably due to the storm we had earlier in the month.

After dealing with customer service, which we can do for you, they sent out a replacement, which we promptly installed, and she’s finally back in business.
