John Dixon: Details

Details from John Dixon's recycled collage works currently on view in our Georgetown gallery.

John Andrew Dixon is one of the few collage artists to solve the challenge of working outside. He creates plein air landscapes from recycled or trashed material, including litter, and refers to this process as “painting in papers.” His distinctive artwork has been widely recognized and is held internationally in both private and institutional collections.

He has written on the topic of fine art collage for 12 years at his blog site, “The Collage Miniaturist.” The artist says, “I’m interested in a counterbalance of pictorial authenticity and creative spontaneity. Cutting and pasting offers a universal experience, and observers like the idea that anything cast off can be repurposed and infused with new meaning. It’s been rewarding for me to watch their sense of discovery, a response similar to what I’ve experienced by exploring the potential of paper. This connection with others has fueled my enthusiasm for representational collage.”

A resident of the Bluegrass region for 35 years, his studio is in the heart of historic downtown Danville. As an adjudicated member of the Kentucky Crafted Program administered by the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency has provided a grant to Dixon for his traveling collection titled LITTER-ALLY KENTUCKY, with federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Julie Quick has been painting professionally as an artist for nearly a decade and is from Lexington, Kentucky. She specializes in the pastel medium. Her work has been recognized multiple times internationally and has received numerous awards, especially for her plein air work. Her work has been exhibited at Fine Art Editions in several shows.

Julie finds her inspiration through observation of daily life and travels. Her subject matter includes equine, landscapes, cityscapes, and florals. Her expressive and bold mark-making responds to what she sees and feels as she paints. She is especially drawn to figurative movement and the emotive response between horse and rider, or the movement of sky against ground or sea. Sometimes she will challenge her perceptions by painting intuitively and from muscle memory, resulting in loose and expressive work.

We are open Tuesday through Friday (9:30 AM to 5:30 PM) and Saturdays (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM).

When it comes to custom framing, our framing specialist, Brittany, creates shadow boxes, museum-grade frames, and pieces suited to your interior decor. Brittany’s artistic sensibilities give her ideas for your design needs, and she has an eye for color.

We coordinate every piece to your vision. Custom framing works best by appointment, so nothing interrupts the creative process. You’re always welcome to walk in and visit the gallery. We hope to see you soon!

Julie Quick has been drawing and painting since her teens, but began prioritizing her art in 2015 by challenging herself to paint every day for a hundred days. Some pieces were easy, and painting came seamlessly to her. Other days, she struggled to post her creations, but she learned that those difficult days taught her how to make the next work of art better. Creative obstacles are overcome with time spent at the easel, patience, and being willing to try new directions. Quick soon realized that problem-solving required time at the easel, and that she could learn through experiment and repeated effort. Failure prepared her for the next day’s painting and helped her improve her process.

With a foundation in design, John Andrew Dixon brings both aesthetic complexity and artisanship to his painterly works. With scissors, blades, pliers, probes, sandpaper, and paste, he saturates and manipulates his ingredients. His use of printed text suggests texture and shadows, creates visual density, and achieves depth. His decades of design decisions and influences allow him to work intuitively on site. Collage, as a medium, addresses the creative tension between order and chaos, just as improvisational musicians elaborate on a melody.
