“Aloha and welcome to JWM ACOUSTICS where Art, Audio and Design Converge…”

JWM ACOUSTICS is a custom audio company catering to the individual needs of the client. Each product is handmade and as unique as the person who chooses it. JWM is pleased to create one of a kind pieces that will enhance the life of each person who experiences it. JWM products are not only built as sound reproduction tool

s, but as instruments that will last for generations. JWM creates pieces designed to provide generations of enjoyment for you and your entire family. Musical instruments with a life of their own. Joshua Weston Miles has a background in visual arts, music, industrial design and engineering. Combining them has been a lifelong passion. Miles has succeeded with the products offered here, representing state of the art sound reproduction and timeless design. Each product is designed to be equally at home in the recording studio, home theater or audiophile listening room. Nearly unlimited combinations of custom woods and finishes enable him to design a system that will perfectly fit within your space. JWM ACOUSTICS is located on the Island of Oahu, in beautiful Hawaii. Currently, there are two locations where the instruments are created. The woodworking and finish facility is located in the heart of Honolulu. The electronics, testing and listening studios are located in the town of Kaneohe on the East side of the island. If you would like to see the works in progress, visitors are always welcome. Accommodations for private viewings and listening sessions are available in the Kaneohe location by appointment. Miles has been messing around with audio equipment for at least ¾ of his life. When nobody was home, he started tearing his pops equipment apart. He was too young to understand how it worked. That was the idea though. He had to figure out how that song from The Sting could make its way from that black disk into those AR speakers! HOW!?! As luck would have it, the answer really was not that complicated. Much like a microphone, a needle or stylus is vibrated by a groove in a record. That vibration is transformed into an electrical signal that flows to an amplifier. That amplifier boosts the signal to a higher power in order to feed a transducer, or speaker. That speaker transforms the electrical signal into pressurized sound waves that our ears can detect as music or your favorite comedy album… Voila! Well, as you may understand, it isn’t that easy. The number of factors involved in good sound reproduction is nearly limitless. To make it truly convincing and life-like is even harder. Add to the mix durability, timeless design and beauty and we now have something truly unique. A balance struck from art and science that has no other purpose than bringing pleasure to the eyes ,ears and mind. This is the idea. This is where the journey begins. This is where it has led him. In the beginning, Miles was simply playing with equipment. More accurately, research and development by means of reverse engineering the equipment from many other companies. Meticulous extraction of parts that worked well and tossing aside the ones that did not. Eventually he was able to find enough of the former to create something unique. Creations that precisely captured the musical qualities JWM himself craved. In time, Miles began creating custom pieces for others including professional equipment for local bands, PA systems and studio monitors for several small recording and mastering facilities. Each one built specifically for the venue in which they would reside and purpose built for only one job. This purpose driven focus caused him to fixate on the analytical side of sound. Flat responses that would get out of the way of the music and allow the mixing engineers to do their best work of conveying exactly what the artist wanted expressed in their music. JWM systems did just that. Disappear altogether. Today, that mission has changed. At the request of some former clients, family members and friends, JWM decided to take some of these very designs and bring them to the public. In 2010 that mission began. Miles Designs LLC and the company you see here, JWM ACOUSTICS, were born. JWM ACOUSTICS creates industrial designs that have been re-focused into true musical instruments. Tuning the analytical side of these pieces out and breathing life into them is the mission. Each one of these products are born from a deep love of art, science and sound. Each piece is a one of a kind, just like a fine violin or piano. Each piece will delight for many generations. Where art, audio and design converge…

I’m completely obsessed with this thing. Another chapter of family musical history has rolled into the shop: the Phonola Model 456.

She’s definitely in need of a full rebuild and restoration, but underneath the dust and tired parts is something pretty special. This beauty came out of my grandparents’ home years ago, disappeared for a while, and recently found its way back into the light.

Along with the console it sits on, this old girl is going to sing again. There’s something wonderful about bringing these family pieces back to life—not just restoring furniture or machinery, but waking up memories.

Stay tuned. This one is going to be fun.

It was a fun challenge matching the finish on this bench. The piano is a 1932 George Steck, and the cabinet work had been refinished around fifteen years ago — fortunately, very well done. The bench, however, had lived a much harder life and showed every bit of it.

There’s something satisfying about chasing those subtle tones and aging characteristics until everything feels like it belongs together again. I’m especially fond of this color combination. These little restoration puzzles always keep the work interesting and me frosty.

Phew!!! This piece has taken a minute. I love it when wood sheds its old skin and takes its first drink. Finish starts tomorrow. Oak, oak, oak. I have a great story about tables like this. I’ll share later. The Spurs game is coming on! 🏀
