Lisbon is one of the cheapest capital cities in Western Europe to actually visit, and one of the few you can cover end to end on foot.

A 3-day plan that works:

Day one. Start in the Alfama district, the oldest part of the city, and walk up to Castelo de São Jorge for the views. End the night with Fado, Lisbon's traditional folk music, in a small Alfama tavern.

Day two. Head west to Belém for the original Pastéis de Belém recipe (kept secret since 1837), the Jerónimos Monastery, and the river. Walk along the Tagus to the Belém Tower.

Day three. Take the 40-minute train to Sintra for Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira. Get there early; both fill up by mid-morning.

The trams (especially the iconic 28) are the photo, but the real Lisbon is the climbs between neighbourhoods. Bring shoes that grip cobblestone.

Best window: April to June or September to October. Mild temperatures, clear skies, and the high-summer crowds haven't arrived or have already left.

Uganda gets a fraction of the safari traffic that Kenya and Tanzania do, despite being home to nearly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas.

Three parks cover almost everything you'd want from East Africa in one trip. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for gorilla trekking. Queen Elizabeth National Park for big-cat savannah and tree-climbing lions. Murchison Falls for the most powerful waterfall in the region, where the Nile gets forced through a 7-meter gap.

The standout experience is the gorilla trek. A guided hike through misty jungle, ending with an hour spent a few meters from a wild family group. Permits are limited daily, which is why crowds stay small.

Best window to go: June to August or December to February. Permits sell out months ahead in peak season, so this is one trip worth planning early.

Most travelers see the Pyramids from the desert. A few thousand people see them every morning from their kitchen window.

Pyramids Gardens is a residential neighbourhood in Cairo, on the eastern edge of the Giza Plateau. From certain balconies and terraces, the Great Pyramids rise above the rooftops, often softened by the morning haze as the city wakes up.

It's a side of Egypt most itineraries skip. Not the desert and the archaeological site, but everyday life unfolding with one of the world's most iconic landmarks in the background.

Could you imagine starting your day with this view? 🇪🇬

Jordan is a small country with four completely different landscapes, and you can see all of them on one trip.

Amman's markets in the morning. Floating in the Dead Sea by afternoon. Petra's rose-red rock city the next day. Wadi Rum's red sand desert at sunset. The country is roughly the size of Portugal, and the four signature stops sit within a 4-hour drive of each other.

The best window to visit is March to May or September to November. Warm days, cool nights, clear skies, and the desert light at its sharpest.

Right now is the back end of spring season, one of the two best times of year to go.

If your Italy list only has Rome, Florence, and Venice, you're missing the country's oldest continuously inhabited city.

Matera sits in southern Italy, in the Basilicata region. Its Sassi district is built from caves carved directly into limestone thousands of years ago. Once abandoned, the dwellings have been restored into homes, restaurants, and boutique stays.

Walking through the Sassi means narrow lanes, stone staircases, and viewpoints that change with every turn. Stay overnight to see the city at golden hour and after dark, when the lights come on and the whole place looks like a film set.

The Treasury is the photo everyone takes home. Petra is a city, not a single building.

Past the Siq's narrow walls, the rose-red cliffs open into something far larger than most travelers realize. Royal tombs, temples, a Roman amphitheatre, and a 45-minute uphill walk to the Monastery, all carved directly into sandstone more than two thousand years ago.

The Nabataeans built a trade hub here. What they left behind feels less like a ruin and more like a city pausing mid-breath.

Some places you visit. Others stay with you long after you leave.

Water at 37°C cascading down white limestone, the smell of sulphur in the air, and no entrance fee.

That's the Cascate del Mulino, just outside Saturnia in southern Tuscany. Thermal water flows continuously from below the surface, carving smooth pools into the rock. The mineral content gives the water that pale blue tone you see in the video.

The pools are open every day, every hour, all year. You can stop here on a Tuscany road trip between Florence and Rome, or build a slow weekend around it.

Turquoise water, white sand, and a coastline where you can swim into a cove that has no road leading to it.

That's Sardinia in summer. The northeast Costa Smeralda is where most travelers head first, but the southern shores stay quieter and the water there is just as clear. Boat access is part of the appeal. The places that take effort to reach are usually the ones that haven't changed.

Inland, the rhythm slows further. Small coastal towns, mountain villages, long lunches, and a pace that matches the season.
