Trade workers promote themselves everywhere.

Facebook.

LinkedIn.

Indeed.

Word of mouth.

The problem isn't that those things don't work.

The problem is noise.

A project photo on Facebook competes with family photos, sports, politics, memes, and everything else in someone's feed.

A post on LinkedIn competes with recruiters, corporate announcements, sales pitches, and endless content.

A résumé tells employers where you worked.

It doesn't always show what you're capable of.

Word of mouth may get you an opportunity.

It doesn't always help an employer understand why you're worth the wage you're asking to earn.

The question isn't whether trade workers should promote themselves.

The question is:

Where should trade workers showcase their skills, certifications, project photos, work history, and experience when employers are specifically looking to hire trade workers?

Every platform has a purpose.

Facebook is for socializing.

For years, employers held most of the cards.

Today, the skilled trades market is changing.

Construction companies, electrical contractors, HVAC contractors, plumbing companies, and manufacturers across the country are struggling to find qualified trade workers.

When demand exceeds supply, value goes up.

It's no different than anything else.

If there is one loaf of bread and five hungry people, that loaf becomes more valuable because there isn't enough supply to meet the demand.

The skilled trades are experiencing the same thing.

Your experience has value.

Your certifications have value.

Your skills have value.

Your ability to show up, solve problems, and get work done has value.

But there is a difference between having value and proving value.
