NEW TECH ARTICLE: Making Legacy Code Testable: Lessons Learned in SDI

Testing legacy code is rarely straightforward. New code is usually written with testing in mind; legacy code isn't as accommodating.

While we haven't found a silver bullet, we've found practical ways to make legacy code in SDI easier to test without a full rewrite:

▪️ Break down large routines into smaller, meaningful operations
▪️ Reduce dependency complexity
▪️ Leverage dependency injection
▪️ Use mocking frameworks strategically
▪️ Shift from UI tests to unit tests where practical

Together, these practices have let us unit test parts of SDI that used to be validated only through the UI, reducing regression risk with every release.

Testability isn't about chasing perfection or rewriting everything. It's about consistent, targeted investment in the code you already have.

Sunny graduated from San Francisco State University with a BS in computer science in 2019 and joined Synergex that year as a junior software engineer for the Information Systems team. In 2021, he was promoted to software engineer and began his transition from IS to the SDI team when an opportunity became available. Since then, he’s contributed to large projects such as overhauling KnowledgeBase and significantly improving parameter IntelliSense in SDI. Sunny enjoys cooking and has a newfound interest in barbecuing. He invested in a smoker and has been smoking a lot of meat ever since.
