We run this manager math a lot inside The After-Shift Movement — a free community of restaurant and hospitality workers, and half the room has seen it from both sides of the desk.
Comment SHIFT to grab the free After-Shift System training in there before your next “opportunity” conversation, so you can walk in knowing exactly what your experience is worth — and never sign a pay cut wearing a title again.
Before you accept a promotion, ask these four out loud — in the office, not after:
1. How many hours does this salary actually own — including closing, opening, and call-out coverage?
2. Do my tips end the day the title starts? (Almost always yes. Price that loss in.)
3. What do the benefits add per hour — insurance and PTO have a real dollar value, so count them honestly.
4. What does this title buy me in two years — a way up, or a way out? If neither, it’s just a longer week.
Divide the salary by the real hours from question one. Compare it to your real hourly with tips. If the promotion number is lower, you’re not being promoted — you’re being purchased, at a discount.
Managers, be honest in the comments: did your first promotion pay you less per hour? And servers — what would they have to put on the table for you to give up your tips?
