I wear many hats as both a Senior Marketing Consultant at Grapevine Local Food Marketing and a farmer.

My favorite hat to wear? Definitely my big straw hat on those perfect 75-degree evenings, harvesting fresh-cut flowers from our Northeast SARE Native Plant Trial Plot. We are in the second year of a Farmer Research project investigating the viability of growing native plants as cut flowers for beginning farmers growing on leased land. As a total native plant nerd, it’s so cool to see the pollinators favor the native plants over the non-native annuals.

I am so grateful for a flexible work schedule so I can remain committed to my professional marketing career, helping farms and food systems orgs grow their impact, simultaneously growing into my life's work of growing food and flowers that support the health of my farm's ecosystem.

Pictured is a harvest of 100% native to the Adirondacks of Upstate NY cut flowers to be shared with a local florist.

— Mary Godnick, Senior Marketing Consultant

We recently worked with Wanda Farms in Illinois to add a few updates to their existing GrazeCart website, including:

🥩 Configuring informational tabs and reviews on product pages to allow customers to toggle between information about the product, farm standards, recipes, and store reviews.
🥩 Setting up FAQs with accordion dropdowns to help customers easily locate key information about farm pickup, home delivery, and subscription orders.
🥩 Adding a custom website footer with a list of website links for easier customer navigation and a new Drip email signup form, all styled with custom code to match their branding and improve usability on mobile screens.

What farmers need to know from Google's new guide for Google Search + AI:
1️⃣ Don’t use AI to write your text. Write the text on your website from your first-hand experience.
2️⃣ The foundational SEO best practices (keywords, quality, relevance, usability, etc.) still apply to generative AI search.

Today marks Natassia's 5 year anniversary at Grapevine — join us in celebrating! She manages Google Analytics setup, configuring custom metrics dashboards, metrics reports, email automations, and Google ads, and we're very fortunate to have her on the team 💚

👩🏾‍💻 What field would people never guess you worked in or studied before your work at Grapevine?
Chemical Engineering and Construction Graphics

🍰 Your teammates know you as a baker extraordinaire... what got you into baking, and what's your top favorite creation over the years?
This is a very interesting question and I honestly don't know that I know what got me started baking. I used to watch my grandmother when she would make sweet potato pie and I really like watching The Great British Bakeoff. When I was vegan I started experimenting with recipes so maybe all of that together is how I got really going. I don't know if I have a favorite but the Raspberry Lemon Cake with Lemon Pistachio Shortbread and Pistachio Praline is probably the one I think I'm most proud off because I made all of the components—the lemon curd, the raspberry jam, the shortbread cookies, and the praline. And I also made a pistachio ice cream to pair with it.

🐓 What has your favorite Grapevine project been?
I think one of my favorite projects was booklet design because I got to do something creative and create something tangible. I also really enjoyed working on the Healing by Growing Farms site because I think with that one I was able to make a lasting impact—and those types of projects always standout and stick with you.

📚 What are you currently learning or trying to get better at?
Right now I'm learning more about growing my own food and fermentation. I'm currently creating my first ginger bug so that I can start making fermented drinks. I would really like to cut back on my dependency of grocery stores and really tap more into local food. I'm also learning more about how AI is shifting SEO — thankfully the way I learned SEO makes it easy to transition into the new world of online optimization.

🌈 What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Comparison is the thief of joy. I try not to focus on what people around me are doing or what they have but instead focus on what I can do and how I can show up. Rather than competing with other people, I simply focus on being a better version of myself each and every day. Because if I'm always focusing on my own growth, I'm never really failing.

We worked with Partners IN Food and Farming, an Indiana organization focused on empowering local farmers, to design their new website. As part of our work, we:

🌱 Organized their content with light editing and optimized it for SEO (search engine optimization)
🌱 Designed a brand new look in a fully custom Squarespace website
🌱 Configured dynamic events, a directory of local conferences, and a news section
🌱 Added resources for farmers and food systems
🌱 Created a website that is easy for the PIFF team to maintain in-house (+we’re always available to lend a hand!)

🥕🍎🥬 Our team recently designed a wholesale produce guide for Region Roots, a wholesale food hub in Northwest Indiana operated by NWI Food Council, to communicate packaging and produce standards with their wholesale producers.

We also created a produce guide template in Canva that Region Roots can easily share with other local food hubs, which they can individually personalize based on their branding.

These custom interactive forms replace paper cut sheets, using conditional logic to make it easy for farmers and customers to make their selections for beef and pork shares.

🥩 For instance, if the customer chooses a 1/2 beef rather than 1/4, they are presented with additional choices for how they want their brisket cut, along with choices for dividing ribeyes/NY strips into both steaks and roasts.

🥓 Likewise, the form hides questions that are irrelevant based on earlier choices, so for example it doesn’t show bacon options if the customer has already selected to keep the pork belly whole.

😁 This also reduces the amount of time Glacier Processing Cooperative spends on customer service related to processing meat!

We set up these forms for Glacier Processing Cooperative, a producer-owned meat processor in Montana, as part of the Shopify website we built for them.
