There are a lot of tiny businesses out there - part time side hustles, consultants, coaches, network marketing consultants.

Who do these people go to for tech support? It's usually either Google or the high-school age kid.

Those options have one thing going for them: cheap
They also have one thing going against them: wrong answers

Usually I can pretty quickly solve a tech issue or prevent a small issue from becoming a large issue So the total amount they pay is tiny compared to the loss of productivity they would go through with "free support."

Here's an example: A new client for us was complaining about pop-up messages on her computer. Her son had helped her install an antivirus program. And then another one. Plus she already had one. The computer slowed to a craw with all those antivirus programs conflicting with each other. I uninstalled all three; reinstalled the good one (that she had paid for). And then went into her browser settings and turned off the pop-up feature. 30 minutes.

A good referral for me would be your friend with a side hustle business.. She complains about all the problems on her computer, and struggles to use it. Let her know that a free consultation with will help send her in the right direction.

Managed Services or Time and Materials?
There are several ways IT companies charge for services. Two of the most common are Time and Materials, the traditional way of invoicing for services; and Managed Services, where the customer pays a flat monthly fee based on the number of computers.

Which one is better?

A year or so ago, a medical office contacted us and said they were paying thousands of dollars every month with another Managed Services provider, and were very disappointed about the cost. So, Transcend Tech took over with a traditional invoicing plan, and they cut their IT bill in half!

More recently, a non-profit organization signed up with us, and they were much more aligned with the managed services option. They like the predictable monthly fee.

This week I rescued a client's email. After a Windows Update, his mail program appeared to have lost all of his saved email.

Using some specialized tools, we were able to recover all of his lost email, and get it to display again the way he wanted.

There are a couple lessons for everyone in this:
1. He had insufficient backups running on his computer. So if our data recovery tools had not been able to recover his email, he would have been completely out of luck.
BackBlaze computer backup costs about $70 per year, which works out to about $6 per month. As a business owner or someone working in a business, you need to get this set up on your computers now.

2. My client's email file was 7 gigabytes! That's enormous, and very difficult to move to the cloud and back. He had about 10 years worth of email in one data file.
If you do frequent archiving and cleanup, you can still keep all of your email, but in smaller files that are easy to work with.
