Favorite car:

While still in grade school, my parents wanted a vehicle we could convert into a camper so that we could easily attend my sister's college tennis matches every fall and spring weekend. My dad found a 1983 Chevy Van that was converted by Coachman into a camper van. It included 2 beds, a stove, a refrigerator, a sink, heating and, a much-needed, bathroom.

When I turned 16 and got my license, it became my every-day mode of transportation!

My mom loved knowing where I was (many of her friends reported when they saw the van cruising around town during school hours). My father loved it for tailgating at every home Chicago Bears game for 15 years (this is where the heater became a necessity)! My siblings and I loved it for every college Spring Break (if that van could talk….)

But one of my favorite memories in that van was Senior Ditch Day in 1987. It was a happy coincidence that Cubs Floppy Hat Day was on the same Friday afternoon. So, after sleeping in, I drove all around Libertyville, Illinois, and picked up no less than 13 people, all of whom squeezed into the van that supposedly only sat 6. Everyone was in great spirits as we drove downtown to Wrigleyville. I turned up the music and listened to the squeals and laughter in the back of the van while everyone shifted and slid into each other as I maneuvered the city streets. We parked in the Brown's Chicken parking lot across from the ballpark, bought our bleacher seats from the ticket booth and made our way into the glorious outfield of Wrigley Field. After the game, we all climbed back in and headed home. It was quieter since we spent the day in the hot bleachers and then stopped at Lake Michigan to just hang out and talk about all our plans for the coming summer and year.

I continued to drive that van until after college when I finally bought my own car. My Chevy Van was a beast but brought so many good memories. As I said, if that van could talk…

Happiest of birthdays to Kathy Hickman, our extraordinary Senior Account Executive!

Favorite car memory:
My first car was a 1977 Mustang II, 4-speed manual V-6. It was white with a tan interior, and had a sunroof and a cassette player. It was the summer of 1984, and my younger brother and I were determined to NOT ride the bus to high school. We saved all summer, from our lifeguard jobs at Twin Towers in Grove City, and an early morning Dispatch paper route. By the end of summer we were shopping for our ride, and we bought the car from a customer on our paper route. Our dad generously agreed to chip in half, and we split the other. Despite the leaky sunroof, we were thrilled, blaring our Purple Rain cassette as we drove to and from school.

Favorite car memory:
My first car was a teal, 1993 Dodge Shadow coupe. I loved that car! I was supposed to get a different car, but my brother was in an accident just before he left for college and totaled it (thankfully he was ok). My mom and I searched for months to find something we could afford, and would be reliable. An uncle of mine called and said one of his co-workers was selling his car. As soon as we test drove it, I knew it was the perfect fit.
The first time I drove it at night was challenging. I was in the marching band, and we were playing at an away football game. When we got back to the school, it was dark. I had never thought to figure out where the headlight switch was because in my limited driving experience, it was always on the right side. But it wasn't there! Fifteen frantic minutes later, with no cell phone (I'm aging myself), I figured out there was a pull switch on the left side of the steering wheel, and voila!
My Dodge Shadow was perfect for driving to school, to work, to my friends' houses, to the movies, to the mall or grabbing a bite to eat with friends.
I had the car for about 5 years and then, while I was at college, someone tried to steal it, and damaged it beyond repair. 💔

Birthday tradition: "In our family we do birthday dinners where the birthday boy or girl gets to choose what we have for dinner and I cook it. This doesn't work on my birthday so we frequently go out to dinner."

Happy International Women's Day!

We celebrate and recognize our she-roes: Kathy Hickman, Samantha Tisdale and Laura Phillips. These women have our backs, have each other's backs and have our clients' backs. This year, in particular, we stand in awe of their tenacity and adaptability as the changes brought about by COVID-19 have demanded even more of them - in their professional lives as well as in their personal ones. None of us is today who we were a year ago. We celebrate that, and know we are unstoppable because of it!
