Just a heads up, there are currently tons of fake Facebook accounts that are posting local news, fake missing people, as well as full households of free items. In all cases the news is fake and the items are not really available. This is part of an experimental algorithm to see who responds as well as gather data from the accounts that reply. Never give out your phone number! Never text a code they give you. As always, if it sounds too good to be true then it most certainly is.

If you commonly use a toaster oven in your home please take a moment to check it over next time you use it. While it’s running look into its side vents and see if there are any sparks or electrical arcing. With this one the contacts on the heat elements became corroded and the shrink tubing melted causing fire initially and then arcing. On the other side repeated opening of the door caused metal filings that caused shorts and electrical arcs up to the handle spring. All of these problems will be cleaned up, soldered, and rewrapped better than from the factory.

Update: The files are on the other thumb drive so recovery was a success!!! 😊❤️

So far an upsetting beginning to the week work wise. A customer brought me a thumb drive another local computer repair place tried to repair but failed. The 4GB Kingston thumb drive has very important personal and financial records on it. The other company said they lost the usb connector to the board so they provided another drive to have its connector harvested from. Upon examining the board I could see a solder trace pad was lifted and gone. I was able to solder in a jumper to the power resistor to bridge the connection. Yay! It worked, let’s see if her files are safe! No, they gave her the wrong board back. The one they returned to her was a generic 32GB drive with HP recovery files on it. 😡 I’m going to check the board the connector came on but I have low hopes that it’s her drive because it has a Toshiba chip on the board.

If you use a Windows version of Microsoft Outlook update it immediately! Microsoft found a vulnerability in Outlook that allows hackers to obtain your password hash simply by sending an email to your inbox.

Just a reminder that the final nail in the coffin for Windows 7 is this coming January 14th! After that there will be no more security or compatibility updates. Now is the time to upgrade of Windows 10 or if your computer supports it, Windows 11. Samsung Solid State drives have also become very affordable and can give some major added speed to your computer if you have not taken the Solid State jump yet. I can update your operating system and also do a 100% clone of your regular hard drive to copy it to a new Solid State drive. PSA : Please let your parents and grandparents know that 99.9% of things for sale on the internet and “free” gift cards, watches, cruise trips, magazines are all a scam! The other 0.1% is also a scam but they won’t believe you if you say 100%. In the past week I have been getting in computers that need full backup and reformatting after older parents have had pop ups and received phone calls that made them install remote access software. One of the cases made the person have to sit down with the FBI at their local bank and the bank has had to change all of their account numbers. Please please please be proactive and have a talk with your parents/grandparents. Only you can prevent monitory estate hemorrhages! If you or your family fall victim to internet scammers and suspect your computer has been compromised give me a call to set up an appointment for a computer checkup, clean out, virus scans, and/or reformat. Your personal files can be saved so you don’t loose precious memories in haste of getting rid of the security threat.

Free Windows 10 advice Wednesday! If you are noticing your computer running slower or buggy it may be because you are not running the current Windows 10 version. The current version is 20H2 and was released October 2020. Not all computers updated automatically, especially if you had a really old version running. To check what version you are running go to your lower left desktop corner and click on the windows logo. Then click on the gear icon for settings. In settings click on System. When system opens scroll down the left column to About and click on it. Then in the right column scroll down to see your current system version. You can download the 20H2 Update Assistant for free from the Microsoft website to bypass other updates.

After taking a look at the Monroe County uptick in Covid cases I unfortunately am making the decision to close BulsCorp Electronics until late spring or until there is a significant drop in infection rates. I will still be available for paid phone walk throughs if you need help getting rid of a computer virus. I accept PayPal, Venmo, and Apple Pay. Good news! BulsCorp Electronics is now open again for drop off business! There are new restrictions due to Covid that I will run through. Please bag the repair you are bringing in and include a full container of Clorox wipes. Include all power cables with the repair. Include a note with your name, address, phone number, email address, log in password if needed, and the problem your device is having. Please wear a mask when dropping off and call when you arrive. A little bit of advice for people building a smart home with smart devices. If you are worried about privacy then stay away from Alexa. Currently without building your own command device Google Home has the least intrusive tech believe it or not. You can pick up google pucks for about $20-$30 both new and used locally on Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, and Letgo. Nest thermostats are great for running your heat and ac, and you can now get smart wall switches so you can control your current lighting systems by voice and app.

It’s time to stop using Microsoft Internet Explorer! This is a call to small offices as well. If you have client information on your computer and you use IE then you are putting them at risk. Use Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox.

You might think that any security issues with Internet Explorer shouldn't be much of a problem anymore. After all, most computer users have moved on to more modern alternative browsers like Chrome, Brave, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft...
