Behold this rare drive I pulled from an old computer! This is no ordinary beast. In 2009, the Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 was the first 2TB 7,200 RPM drive ever made, at a cost of about $380 - which is what I paid for a 4GB Maxtor drive in 1997 but 500x smaller! Should I have waited? Nah, you can't win that game.

This heavy brick works, but is quite loud - and very slow compared to any modern SSD offering. But I always have nostalgia for these memories. I love living and watching all this progress with computers.

Today: 2TB SSD about $140 and 5x faster than this 2009 Hitachi.

Difficult repair. Battery replacement on 2016 12” MacBook. Alcohol loosens adhesive, take care not to rupture old battery. Works like new once again.

Thank you to Ed of Green Bank for your business! Ed has a 2013 iMac with a failing hard drive. An SSD upgrade got it running faster than ever. Screen requires removal of old adhesive and new sticky strips to reattach.

Upgraded that same 2014 MacBook Pro that needed the battery with a 1TB NVMe SSD as well. It had an original Apple 500GB SSD. The NVMe is faster and half the price of the Apple equivalent. This Intel module, which has a standard connector, comes with an adapter since Apple uses a nonstandard connector. Cloned old SSD to new drive with Disk Utility.

Replaced a failing battery in a 2014 MacBook Pro 15”. Apple will tell you this can’t be done, since the battery is glued in. Apple says entire topcase (inc. keyboard and touchpad) has to be replaced to get a new battery. Not true. Some alcohol to dissolve the adhesive, along with great care, and a new genuine Apple battery can be installed much cheaper than Apple will do it for you.

What a beautiful mind in Katherine Johnson. The world is a better place for her contributions to math and science. May her legacy live on as she is missed.

Johnson was among a group of black women mathematicians who helped power NASA's space travel in the early 1960s when the agency was still segregated.
