Hey, I wanted to share something as a PSA. Because people make temporary moves across state lines all the time. Whether for a job, or for romance, or to take care of a sick family member.
If January 1st comes along but you're not yet ready to change your permanent state of residency, you most likely won't be able to purchase healthcare in the state that you're in.
Not through the ACA.
Not any other way.
This happened to me this year. It was completely disastrous because I had a hard to diagnose condition that lasted over three months. It turned out to be a systemic bacterial infection, and it was resistant to antibiotics.
Getting to a doctor meant I had to drive over six hours and stay overnight at a hotel. There were symptoms reminiscent of both COVID and cancer, so I was quarantining for most of that time.
The isolation was incredibly difficult. It took a huge toll on my mental health.
I'm not on social media much anymore, but I think it's really important people know about this.
We tend to take health risks more seriously in the era of , but this one caught me by surprise.
** If you're planning to relocate long enough to be getting mail at a new address, be absolutely sure that your health insurance travels with you. **
Because people get sick unexpectedly. At any age. Even if you have no prior medical history. Even if you pride yourself on being independent, resourceful, and levelheaded.
Everything you think you know about yourself kind of goes away when you can't breathe.
