Today's Topic - Ghost Tapping.
"Ghost tapping" is a modern, contactless, electronic pickpocketing scam where thieves use concealed Near Field Communication (NFC) card readers to trigger unauthorized payments from credit cards or digital wallets in your pocket. Scammers get within inches of victims in crowded places, potentially charging cards multiple times in one passing.
Method: Scammers use portable, often hidden, POS (point-of-sale) devices to read card data through purses, wallets, or pockets.
Location: High-crowd, fast-paced environments like festivals, concerts, markets, or public transport are prime locations.
Target: Contactless, tap-to-pay credit/debit cards and mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay).
The "Bump": Thieves may "accidentally" bump into you to get close enough to initiate the transaction.
How to Protect Yourself -
Use RFID-Blocking: Store cards in RFID-blocking wallets or sleeves to prevent unauthorized scanning.
Monitor Accounts: Set up real-time bank push notifications/alerts for all transactions to detect unauthorized charges immediately.
Be Aware in Crowds: Keep bags and wallets secure in densely packed areas.
Turn Off NFC: Consider disabling NFC/contactless pay on your phone when not in use.
Verify Before Tapping: Always check the merchant name and total amount on the terminal screen before completing a payment.
Use Biometrics: Ensure your mobile wallet (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) requires a fingerprint or Face ID for every transaction.
This is the season that we're traveling and enjoying Spring Break. Be safe and stay alert.
