A few years ago, during my brand audit phase, I noticed something that honestly broke my heart.
Established business owners with incredible skills kept asking me the same thing: “Can you just make my website prettier?”
Here’s what was really happening behind the scenes…
They were focused on fonts and colors while their messaging remained completely unclear. Their ideal clients couldn’t figure out what they actually offered or why it mattered. Beautiful design sitting on top of confusing copy.
And it was costing them serious money.
I’d seen this pattern during my wedding planning days – watching couples pass on incredibly talented vendors because their websites left them more confused than convinced. Amazing photographers with stunning portfolios, but homepages that made no sense.
When I started explaining purchasing psychology to my audit clients – how people actually make buying decisions, why clear messaging matters more than pretty graphics – they were mind-blown. “I never knew any of this existed,” they’d tell me.
That’s when I realized I was solving the wrong problem.
So I created comprehensive brand strategy that tackles the real foundation: who you’re serving, how they make decisions, why they should choose you. Once that’s solid, THEN you write the copy. And then, and only then, do we design around that strategy.
You cannot skip steps without missing opportunities.
Now my strategy clients understand this goes way deeper than aesthetics. It’s about creating a system that actually converts visitors into clients. Many realize their brand evolves with their business and stick around for ongoing support because they’ve experienced what strategic foundations can do.
If your website feels like an expensive business card that’s not making you money, let’s talk about fixing the foundation first.
(I actually dove deep into this whole ‘copy before design’ approach on a recent podcast with my copywriter friend Sam .copy and two other designers. We talked about why so many businesses get this backwards and how to fix it. If you want to listen in (it’s a short episode), I’ll drop the link in my stories!)
