Whenever I’m asked why I started surcee.com, my answer is almost always the same – I am a terrible gift giver. Not just bad, terrible. Especially with friends, family and loved ones. I forget dates and special occasions or allow them to sneak up on me with little thought toward being thoughtful. Then, I panic! These are the people that mean the most to me, and I don’t know what they love, are into or enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, occasionally I do hit one out of the park but that’s not enough to overcome the many strikeouts that surround the one I put in the stands. And you know who feels the best when someone I care about opens something I gave them, smiles big and sighs, “this is perfect” or “how did you know”? That’s right – me; probably you too.

Giving gifts should be fun and enjoyable; for me, far too often, it is a source of anxiety. I want to be thoughtful and on time so they know how I feel about them, but I’m not that great at picking up any small signal that a certain “something” would be a good idea.

Also, I can’t keep up with the trends as to what is cool now. I’m a father of two teenage boys that love video games. I get confused trying to figure out what game to buy and for what gaming system (Xbox or PS4). These details are important and make the difference between howls of delight and the look that’s says, “you kept the receipt, right?”. Nothing worse than that question, and I really don’t want to be asked that one anymore…
