Welcome to DeFlock - An open-source project mapping license plate readers.

What are ALPRs - Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs or LPRs) are AI-powered cameras that capture and analyze images of all passing vehicles, storing details like your car's location, date, and time. They also capture your car's make, model, color, and identifying features such as dents, roof racks, and bumper stickers, often turning these into searchable data points.

These cameras collect data on millions of vehicles regardless of whether the driver is suspected of a crime. These systems are marketed as indispensable tools to fight crime, but they ignore the powerful tools police already have to track criminals, such as cell phone location data, creating a loophole that doesn't require a warrant.

📱 iPhone Users: Check Your NameDrop Settings

If you or your children use an iPhone, there’s a setting called NameDrop that was introduced with iOS 17. It allows two compatible Apple devices to share contact information or photos when they are brought close together.

When iOS 17 was released, law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity professionals raised concerns that some users—particularly children—might not realize the feature was enabled.

How NameDrop Actually Works

There has been some confusion about how this feature works.

Simply walking past someone does NOT allow them to steal your contact information.

For NameDrop to work:

• The two compatible devices must be brought very close together.
• The devices must be in the appropriate state for the feature to activate.
• A prompt appears on the screen, giving you the option to share your information or receive the other person's information.

So while the feature does have safeguards built in, some people may simply prefer not to have it enabled.

Want to Turn It Off?

If you'd rather disable NameDrop—especially on a child's iPhone—it's easy:

1️⃣ Open Settings
2️⃣ Tap General
3️⃣ Tap AirDrop
4️⃣ Turn OFF the "Bringing Devices Together" option

That's it.

🔐 A good rule with smartphones: Every major iOS update can introduce new features and settings. It's worth taking a few minutes to review what changed rather than simply assuming everything is configured the way you want it.
