It has been a decade since Apple integrated Siri right into its iPhone software and mainstreamed the voice-activated assistant. But the assistant is just one of the voice-powered tools in your smartphone’s ever-growing audio toolbox. Your device can also be a digital recorder, a dictation machine, a podcast production studio and more. Here’s how to get things done with more talking and less typing.

What do you do with a $69 million artwork that doesn’t physically exist?

That’s the question faced by the Singapore-based investor calling himself Metakovan, who made headlines last month when he bought the digital artwork “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” by the American artist Beeple at Christie’s.

The work is a non-fungible token (NFT) – a new type of virtual asset that has its ownership status and authenticity verified by blockchain. NFTs have exploded in popularity in 2021, with prices skyrocketing.

We think this is a good thing: Google is soon switching on two step verification by default. What do you think?

Google has announced that it intends to enroll all users in its two-step verification (2SV), provided their accounts are appropriately configured. The news came yesterday, which was world password day – a day dedicated to promoting safer password practices.

Two-step verification has been offered by Google since 2011 and various improvements to the process have been made over the years. Text and email notifications were expanded to allow the use of Bluetooth keys and, more recently, the use of the Google Prompt.

When was the last time you had to enter in your Windows 10 product key? This thought struck me earlier this week when we were talking about building and upgrading PCs.

I realised that on a few of my PCs, I've not had to enter in the Windows 10 product key for years, despite numerous upgrades and even fresh installations of Windows 10 itself. Over the years, some of the PCs have been upgraded so many times that one could argue that they are no longer the same machines that Windows 10 was originally installed on. Sort of like the Ship of Theseus that Vision was talking about at the end of WandaVision.

Despite the strong emphasis Apple continues to place on the iPhone’s main camera, its hardware specification lags significantly behind the competition. This could all be about to change.
The latest information from analyst and perennial leaker, Ming-Chi Kuo, states that the 2022 iPhone flagships will come with an all-new 48-megapixel main camera set to take iPhone photography to “a new level.”

If you’ve ever gotten your phone wet in the rain, dropped it in water or spilt liquid over it, you’re not alone. One study suggests 25% of smartphone users have damaged their smartphone with water or some other kind of liquid.

Liquid penetrating a smartphone can affect the device in several ways. It could lead to:

blurry photos, if moisture gets trapped in the camera lens
ruffled audio, or no audio
liquid droplets under the screen
an inability to charge
the rusting of internal parts, or
a total end to all functionality.

You may not realise it, but Microsoft likes to hoover up an awful lot of your data every time you use Windows 10. Thankfully, there are ways to limit what is collected through Microsoft’s Settings app and by managing your Microsoft account.

The Android 11 update that was released last year and whose rollout still continues these days brought several important improvements for Android Auto, but at the same time, it also introduced a series of new problems that Google is still working on fixing.

Do you want easier access to your browser history? The new Chrome Memories could
soon replace your browser history and Google activity

We’ve been tracking a Chrome developer flag for a while now that’s called ‘Chrome Memories’. First discovered by Dinsan at Chrome Story, the URL chrome://memories returned a blank page for weeks. Then, little by little the Chrome development team added more page elements. Initially, a simple line of text that read ‘Based on previous web activity’. Then, a blue header with a title at the top left of the page that said ‘Memories’, and a ‘Search memories’ feature.
Now, with the release of Chrome OS 92 on the Canary channel, the page has been populated with seemingly everything it needs in order for the feature to launch! The main part of the page is littered with a seemingly endless wall loaded with things you’ve previously searched for. This section says ‘Try searching for’. Clicking one of these items will take you directly to a standard Google search with results for that keyword.

A public service announcement for anyone who, like me, is using a years-old Dell computer as their primary machine: Dell has released a security patch for a security vulnerability affecting close to 400 different computer models manufactured between 2009 and right now. That’s, uh, a lot of laptops.
